Willard report from saturday 02-02-08
#1
Reelfast and I decided to try Willard last Saturday. I didn’t think this was worth posting because no fish were caught[unsure] but thought some of you might be interested. The ice in the channel was 6 inches thick and the depth was 7ft where we fished.

After an hour or so we headed out into the bay, we went out about 100yds, the depth was 9ft, we then went another 100yds, depth was 13ft.

I'm not sure how the ice was beyond that but it was over 12 inches at the two spots we fished in the bay. We marked a lot of fish in the channel when we first punched our holes but the fish disappeared after a while. We seemed to be getting a few light bites in the channel using pink rat finkies, then in the bay we got a couple of bites using night crawlers and meal worms. I was using 2" curly tail jigs and a bucktail jig in the bay. We also marked fish on the bottom and about three feet under the ice. We fished about three hours and called it quits, I guess we should have stayed longer but the wind started to pick up and I did not bring my ice tent. We got there about 8:30 and left around noon. There was another guy fishing closer to shore but he hadn't caught any fish when we left. He said he knew Brody(lunkerhunter2), I think he said his name was Matt, but he said he wasn't a member of BFT. I called the Willard state park phone number and found that each park makes their own rules about allowing ATVs or snowmobiles on the ice. It looks like it would be a good way to get around and a better way to find some active fish but I guess that isn’t happening at Willard. I think that deep area along the West dike could be a better place to fish but it could be tough access with all this snow. The snow was only a few inches deep on the ice, with some drifted snow in places that was 8 inches or so. Oh, one last thing, there was a little slush at the edge of the ice in the channel but none on top of the ice. If we got a few folks together and fished the bay maybe we could find some active fish, there is good access and a lot of open space to fish and the parks department has plowed the parking lot so there is plenty of parking. What do you guys think? WH2

What did this "Matt" look like? I don't recall knowing a "Matt" that is not on BFT. Did he say where he knew me from?
Too bad you didn't catch any fish. I have been seriously kicking the idea around. I may take my wheeler around to the light pole and "walk" up over the dike and fish.[cool]

Dark hair about your age, maybe a little older, drives a red Toyota pickup. He said something about talking to you when fishing and you told him about the ice fishing contest.
