Duck Creek/Aspen Mirror
#1
I went up to catch some of the left over trout from last year and maybe hook into some nice looking spawners. Got there around 3 PM and when we got close smelled this awful stench that I haven't smelled since they killed off Minersville. It was fish, their was pills lining the shore and running down stream. Needless to say but I think this lake winter killed but most of the fish looked like chubs but it's hard to tell because they were old and the birds have picked on most of them. At Aspen mirror we didn't see any fish but Mammoth Creek Hatchery was closed last year and I don't think this lake was stocked like previous years.

I was wondering if the DWR killed these lakes off before the ice came one. If they did this would be two years in row that I've fished dead lakes. LOL

They usually stock the lake around the 1st so don't worry their will be fish here for everybody.

Here's some more info for anybody who fish this area.

The river flows are moderate and mostly clear.

Navajo lake is still frozen over and the road is snow covered. The piped spring has open water. The ice around the lake is soft and unsafe.

They closed the hatchery because of the whirling bacteria so are they going to open it this year? I'll ask the hathery managers daughter and give ya the repot ok. I have lived in Cedar for 35 years and never seen it as low as I did this past summer. I hope it was just chubs because there is honestly 5lb fish in there

Duck Creek and Aspin Mirror is a great place to fly fish and take the kids and relax.

Me and my brothers used to hook into some nice fish but lately it's geting a little tough.

I've sent some emails out but never got any reply's about mammoth's hatchery. I was up there last week and it still had the closed signs. Jim bowns was saying that they were going to drill and new well and sanatize the runs. I hope they get it going this year or make it bigger and better. The other hatchery that was closed from whirling disease is geting nice make over.

SUDH their was a lot of chubs and the other fish were rotting so I didn't take the time and take a closer look. I don't know why chubs would die and not trout. Any thoughts on that.

Gosh I don't know why. Do you know how long they been in there? I didn't fish it last year, but the year before I don't recall seeing any.

I usually fish these lakes when I'm up at the cabin but I've never caught any chubs. I don't really like fishing because people like to crowd me when I'm catching fish. I'll move and they'll do it again. I guess they don't know any better but it's irritating. The stream basically dried up and Aspen Mirror had some minnows but I don't think the DWR stocked it all last year. I didn't even see any fish jump or swimming around. I think that's makes me think everything died is their was dead minnows on the bottom. Minnows are usually tough and can survive in some of the worst conditions. When they killed of Minersville last time did you walk the river and see all the dead fish, it was a lot like that. Their was a couple of turkey vultures flying around so I bet they eat most of the floating fish.

I'm sure this will scare some people from fishing it. I mean the smell.

Yes wasn't that the most disgusting smell. I put a product on the football field 4 years ago that was a emulsified product that had ground up fish in it. It cost me 2000.00 for 21 gals. They failed to tell me the smell it would give out. Well after I applied it smelled exactly like those rotting fish on Minersville River. If you accidently stepped on the field that product would get on your shoes. For about 2 weeks it was so stinky lol needles to say no more of that product, and it didn't do what they promised me. Did ya hear about the huge 5-8 lb browns in Cox's pond just below the dam that he lost.
