Perch Party
#1
[cool][#0000ff]TubeBabe and I met up with LloydE and his charming (fishing) wife at Rabbit Gulch (Starvation Reservoir) this morning. Since Mrs. Lloyd has not been checked out on tubology yet, they opted for sharing their nice inflatable. I think Lloyd just wanted to do some bottom bouncing this time.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Air temp 60 and water temp 68 at launch. We launched at the end of the old highway. I was surprised at how high the water level still is. By this time last year it was really low.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Started by throwing crankbaits shallow. Bad move. The weeds are taking over that end of the lake in any depth less than about 20 feet. Harvested lots of salad before hooking any fish. Got a few small smallies but no wallies. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Started jigging with an assortment of PBJ's (Painted Body Jigs) and Roadrunners. Right at 7 AM both Lloyd and I announced on the walkie talkies that we had scored our first walleyes. His was 19 inches and mine was 16. Turned out to be our biggest of the day for both of us.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]There had been a light NW breeze blowing when we launched. We anticipated it would do the usual...lay down about 9 and then pick up from the SE or SW later in the morning. Nope. The NW breeze just kept blowing, and blowing and blowing. But, it got stronger as it blew longer. TubeBabe and I had to kick a bit to maintain position, but Lloyd and his wife were having a tough time trolling in the high profile inflatable at walleye speed. And, they did not have an anchor big enough to hold them over a school of fish. Nevertheless, they motored upwind and wind trolled all morning and both got quite a few fish. In fact, Lloyd beat his personal best walleye day. Last trip it was 7 in one trip. Today he scored 8. Of course some of them were small enough to barely count as a walleye...but he did his part to lighten the predator overload.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]TubeBabe got quite a few nice perch, but did not land any wallies. But, she likes her perchies so she had fun. Both of us had trouble staying over the small groups of fish we found periodically. We would go bang bang on a couple of fish, and by the time we pitched over the marker buoy we were blown off the spot.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]I kicked way up into the upper end of Rabbit Gulch. Found perch and a few walleyes holding in 22 to 24 feet of water. Lost a couple of nice walleyes and landed three. Probably caught over 75 perch. Most were "cookie cutter" 9 inchers, but a few between 10 and 12. Mrs. Lloyd and TubeBabe both brought in a couple of porky 12 plus perchies.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Heavy weed growth in the upper end of RG. Top to bottom in 16 feet of water. Could not even fish in water less than 20 feet without bringing in a hay bale. More salad than we needed for our fish dinner.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]There was one boat dragging bottom bouncers along the same slot (22 to 24 feet) that I was fishing. They caught several walleye and some perch. But, even they were having trouble trolling with control in the breeze.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]The wind seemed to be picking up a lot right about noon so our group hit the beach. It was good to meet Mrs. E, and to fish with Lloyd again. I suspect that there are not many anglers with a greater passion for walleye than he has.[/#0000ff]
