I see the 2009 Lowrance units will have the broadband sonar built in. They are up in price a bit, but that feature cost $600 as a separate item last year.
The big thing that affects the float tubing fraternity is that this feature reduces the power consumption drastically. So our batteries can shrink, and get lighter, and still power the unit all day.while on the water.

A 5" screen unit will fit.
I rather like the idea of a Lowrance LMS-522c or it's replacement the HD5, and working it on a fraction of the power it used to use.
Cabelas have discounted the 2008 units to $550 with the introduction of the newer HD5 due soon.

And I catch flack cause my Fly Rods are $600. and plus.
I can see this kind of gear on the ocean however.
For me, lakes, just need one to show the bottom structure and maybe schools or what level fish are holding.
The old man has the GPS, but then again, the fish are always moving.
I tried the BIG RED X once but, the fish musta moved[laugh][laugh]

If ya ask me I think the Fishin Buddy fishfinders are the perfect option for tubes and toons. I mean they have there own power supply, everything is one piece, and no wires to run. And with the price how could you go wrong!!

But the FB has come a long way. The older models were only good for bottom and structure. Even the FB II, I know cause I had one.
The new ones are MUCH MORE now. The have a bigger cone and allot of the newer features.
But all in all, they are getting a little pricie for the good ones. Sometimes cheaper to just buy a good BOAT model, and a rechargeable battery, like I did. A little fabricating for the mount and the transducer, that is all.

Apparently I am the only one using a Fishing Buddy sonar that is bothered by the drag it creates. I don't like compensating by kicking harder with one foot than the other or always turning in one direction to accommodate this drag. I use mine to check unfamiliar water then leave it in the car or home if I'm fishing familiar ponds or lakes.

Good point Steve. But look at it this way, rotate sides and you could end up with legs like ARNOLD![laugh]
I had same problem with mine. I guess that is another nice thing about the boat style. I put the transducer behind me.

My boat has a trolling motor mount and i am not using it at the moment, so that is where i mount my fishing buddy. Yeah it is behind me but i turn the alarm on and when it beeps i give it a look. Best of all since it is mounted high i can collapse it when im not using it and it does not drag in the water! Maybe you could make a mount for yours that is high like that steve? At least then if you would need it you would have it with you. just a thought.
