Lake Mead Saturday

Saturday, 11/15/08- Hit the water early (5:30am). Made the way to Las Vegas Wash in the dark and started searching for shad. Nothing.

Enjoyed an awesome Lake Mead sunrise.

With empty live wells, headed in search of top water action. Found birds diving in Government Wash. Scratched two small stripers off a point. Moved to Sand Island for some jigging, found birds diving near shore on the Lake Shore Road side. Scratched up three more stripers.

Headed back to Las Vegas Wash in hopes of finding shad. Successful. Back to Sand Island, sent shad deep for over an hour resulting in failure. Not even a bite.

Five stripers and a bag of shad went home today.

[cool]Hey BaySport, always love to read your posts! I thought the shad would be up at gray light. I guess they had to wake up. Way to go on the sight fishing for bird activity. Looks like those stripers went about 3lbs. or so. Always nice to get them on the artificials.

Me too! Nothing around early. Went back later and tossed blindly into the muddy water entering the lake at Las Vegas Wash. Hard to handle the boat with a breeze trying to blow you around in two feet of water. It was tough, ended up with about thirty shad, mud all over the boat, and no stripers to show for it! [crazy]

Hey, trout plants start next friday I think. You going to be there?

[cool]Hey BaySport, Yeah, I think I will hit it after work. I would like to put the tube in at Boulder Harbor but I don't think that NDOW will let me Crawdad Cove would be nice but I haven't ever been there.Is it off 8 mile road or Boxcar Cove road? I have fished Hemenway both in the tube(off the jetski beach) and off the points and have had success. However the launching of a floatube this year may be an issue as I have seen signs of no floattubing close to the fishing pier. I am hoping that means within the imaginary line from the berm on either side of the pier. Either way it should be interesting to see how many big stripers attend the plants.As far as shad, I have seen a huge ball of them in the Boulder Harbor area close to the pier.

Does anybody know of a good spot to launch a kayak for the trout plants? I really dont feel like making the 5 mile paddle from boulder harbor around the point of dle island.

I think you are right, you would maybe have to stay out of the area around the pier that boats are prohibited. I'm sure there will be plenty of boats hanging out at that imaginary line just waiting for the trout to be dumped in the water. []

These are the directions to the sites according to NDOW:


HEMENWAY POINT – From Boulder City, drive south on U.S. 93 and turn north to Lake Mead National Recreation Area (LMNRA) just before reaching the Hacienda Casino. About 100 yards past the entrance station to LMNRA, turn right and head east toward the lake. About 100 feet from the water’s edge, turn north on the paved road and then turn east just after reaching the crest of the hill. A long point can be seen from the crest of the hill. Fish are stocked near the end of that point on the south side. The road has been graded and is easy to drive with a passenger vehicle.
BOULDER HARBOR – From Boulder City, drive south on U.S. 93 and turn north into Lake Mead National Recreation Area (LMNRA) just before reaching the Hacienda Casino. After entering LMNRA, continue driving on the Lakeshore Road northward, passing the Hemenway launch ramp and the Lake Mead Lodge. About a quarter mile past the lodge, turn right past the rock-walled bathrooms and follow the road. Look for the fishing pier.
CRAWDAD COVE – From Henderson drive east on Lake Mead Parkway and pass through the National Park Service fee station. Almost immediately after leaving the fee station turn left onto Northshore Road. From Las Vegas drive east on Lake Mead Boulevard, pass through the fee station and turn left on Northshore Road. Once on Northshore Road continue east to mile marker 9, turn right onto Crawdad Cove Road and follow the signs while keeping to the right at the main fork in the road.

I have been out to Crawdad Cove. The dirt road that you go down gets rough if you try to get close to the water. Seen a fellow stuck with his camper trailer. The road to hemenway point you could drive a car pretty close to the water. I seen fish jumping at crawdad cove. I also seen red crawdads in the grasses by the water. There is a nice cove that is kinda sheltered by the wind with a little island one could swim/ wade to fish off. I hear they also have catfish there too. Where I was fishing is where a fellow told me was where he was casting last summer. I caught a striper off Hemenway point yesterday that was about three pounder. I initinially came to fish for the trout that were stocked but no luck with lots of wind.
