Some scarey stuff out there.

[#191970]Justy got back from Fort Myers Beach and did some kayak fishing in Estero Bay. The fish were not plentiful for me but one afternoon my wife came along, we both have 9' LL Bean Kayaks. I was moving slowly in to the shallow grass beds when it felt like I coasted up on a rock, I could feel the scrape just in front of my butt on the bottom of the yac. A nonosecond later I was violently lifted out of the water and in a white water cascade of water over my head and all around me. The trashing went on for a couple seconds and I saw a wake leaving the scene. Holy Crap what was that!
My wife was only 30ft away and saw the entire thing. She said the water splash was so big she could not see me because the Kayak came out of the water and water was coming up from both sides about 3 feet to each side and over my head.
She thought I was thrown out of the yak.
I had a few gallons of water in the kayak and every thing was calm.
I guess it was a mature Sting Ray, probably more scared than I was, but definitely bigger and stronger.
What a kick!
It made up for slow fishing.[/#191970]

Sounds like you were lucky, it could have been something a lot worse. Keep on fishing.

Wow, great story.[Image: happy.gif]

I was in FT. Meyers las month and the fishing was also pretty slow. The tarpon fishing was off but I lucked out, after taking the video you see on the right bar of this page the fisherman from Indiana invited me on his boat and let me catch one of those jewfish (not as big as the one in the video but probabley close to 200 lbs.). It was really good of him and the guide he was fishing with.

I want to try to get back for Tarpon later next month.

[#008000][Image: happy.gif]A while back I was fishing the gulf [wading] off of Sanibel Island and I had an encounter with a little ray. He clipped the back of my heal causing me to spill blood all over the place. Good thing that I didn't become bait myself. Big or small they can be a problem.[Image: bobwink.gif][/#008000]

My wife was just talking about getting a couple Bean or Hobie yaks to run through the intercoastal, etc. I'm all for getting her out there, but this will make you think twice.

Glad you made out all right.

I used to live in fort lauderdale and I spent alot of time in the keys... There are many things larger than you and your kayak out there swimming around, and when you are on the water you are in their territory.

I got bumped in my small boat one time by a 6ft, bull shark, and it definitely made me think twice everytime I launched after that... Glad to hear you weren't injured.
