california pier fishing (possibly stearns)

I am headed out to visit the in-laws in fresno, for christmas but would hate to go to cali without throwing in a fishing trip or some crabbing. we were throwing around the idea of throwing in a hoop net at stearns and doing some fishing while we were there, but I am pretty open to anything. I need a good salty fishing fix. But of course being from utah I don't get out here too much and I am not sure what the fishing is like this time of the year or what is in season. Any help/suggestions would be greatly helpfull and if there are other places I should be looking to fish those suggestions would be nice too. but like I said any suggestions would be welcome, thanks in advance,
