Slip Fishing
#1
Hey all-
A non-fishing friend of a friend has invited us out to his cabin cruiser for poker game on the back deck for an evening. Think: cards, cold beer, cigar and of course...

Dropping a line over the rail while I'm playing. We are not planning on leaving the marina and I'll be the only fishing-man in the crowd (criminal, I know). In old days (what, maybe 13 years ago?) another friend and I would drop a simple rig with a 'chunk-a-chovy' down 30-40 feet or so, and that worked great in the evenings, if the fish were not always very big.

I'm writing to see if anyone had any additional, better or other ideas for this setup? I was told the water is near 70 feet.

If all goes well, I'll have a bunch of converts on my hands and we'll be running that ship all over the lake this summer. Right? I'll hand the pole off and say "You reel this one. I've got a good hand" and they will be hooked, so to speak.

Thanks in advance, pics will follow.

Hey Simon you old coot how the heck are ya? Sounds like a pretty sweet deal, cards and SI-Thais. My only suggestion in addtion to your plan is to chum, heavy chum. All those chovies will make the cards stink, so in addition I would suggest chumming several cans of corn. Whole sweet corn, the cheapest you can find will do fine. If you really want to get fancy open them ahead of time, drain them and put them in a big ziplock with some garlic salt and crushed up fresh garlic. You may want to double bag this mess to keep the smell down. But if not the corn right from the can is fine too. I have had luck with it. Brings in cats and stripers (and yes carp, but at that depth carp rarely feed). If you can use two lines move one from to time to time at diff. depths and let one soak on the bottom unless you find a good depth then of course put them both there. And remeber the Ace is highest card Simon, not a 1. [Wink] Good luck brother.

Back in the day when the Las Vegas Marina was in Las Vegas Wash, caught many nice stripers off the stern of my buddies cabin cruiser. We would go out and net shad and return to the slip, drink beer, and kick butt all night long.
I feel better know,

Yeah, that's the general plan, and I'm darn jazzed about it. Although, the only thing I have to net bait with is a 12 foot throw net I used in the islands to catch shrimp and what not in the surf. Good times. I suppose I could chuck it around the marina someplace.

Hey there just as a heads up, and I am sure it’s too late, but any net with a diameter greater than 36 inches will net you a big fat ticket.

Good to know- thanks dude.

The trip was a fat zero in the bite dept. I am giving it another shot this weekend while I yank the water pump off the port motor.

Actually it's a 36" Radius, and if I remember my geometry classes correctly... well, when I bothered to show up,
a circle with a 3 foot radius = a circle with a 6 foot diameter .
in any case a 12' castnet would get you fined if caught.

Here's the qute from NDOW:

Thanks for clarifying. I did not interpret that rule correctly, and never got to geometry, held up in algebra for two years, but I was sure that 12' was too big. Good luck next time Simon, I am telling you man, more corn!

Yeah, its a 3 foot radius, 6 foot diameter max. Ive seen dudes at the lake recently in boulder harbor throwin' nets that were WAYYY too big. I wont be the snitch though.
