Latest Ririe Fishing Report-Still biting!
#1
[Smile] My father, son and myself arrived at Ririe about 9:15 a.m. intent on ice fishing. Road from main highway to reservoir was partially drifted over from Tuesday's snow storm from blowing snow overnight. Happened to take a pickup and was glad as my car would have high centered on the road. Straight out and due west about 100 yards was two groups of fisherman totalling about 8 fishermen. One group was in to a school of kokanee and landing several as we walked over to watch the action. They just about hall had their limits. Nice fat thick fish running about 10 to 11 inches with a small koke or two about 5 to 6" inches landed and returned. Counted about 25 fishermen scattered from the landing up to the dam and most fishing on the east side.

We headed up the lake and over to the west side and fished about 40 yards off shore. Very small bunches of kokanee coming through about every 45 minutes. Picked up a kokanee or two each time but seemed like fish moved through with lightening speed as action only last 45 seconds to two minutes and then fish were gone. This happened several times. Finally about 2:00 p.m. a big school came through with twenty minutes of action that was great. Using red and white rubber jigs and pink paddle bugs with a metal attracter (spoon with no hook 8" up ther line). I caught two kokes at the same time on a double jig spreader rig. That was awesome. We also caught one 8" fine-spotted Snake River cutthroat. Saw three bald eagles with one feeding on the ice and the other two gliding thru the air together. All total kept 16 nice fat kokanees and one trout between the three of us and let two other kokanee go and lost several more at the holes. Fished between 12 and 20 feet down for the kokes where the fishfinder marked them. No perch tho.

I ice fish not because I like the cold but because it is the only time of year I can impress my wife, by walking on water.

Good to hear that they are still there. I am trying to decide if I want to hit it one more time on Sat. or go somewhere else just for the sake of something new.

I will probably end up there as they say "if it aint broke don't fix it."

Windriver I enjoyed your fishing reports on Ririe. My father hadn't been fishing in a year and a half due to family responsibilities. Your reports inspired him to want to go fishing and he needed to get away for a day of relaxation. He had a great time and now wants to go back this coming Wednesday to catch some more kokanee salmon. Again thanks! [Smile]

Two of us fished this evening from 4:30 to 6:30 and graphed quite a few fish. About 5:45 it completely died with an occasional one swimming through. We caught 6 kokes and 1 rainbow all about 12" and a 7" perch. Two others who were 40 yards away when we got there had limits of kokes. They were trying for perch as well. Jigging worked the best. They were at 20' to the bottom at 40' but mostly at 25' and 1-2' off the bottom. It was soft by the rocks on the east side.

I fished it yesterday evening and the bites were light, but landed 12 kokes, 11 perch, and one chub.

The kokanee were still hitting at 5:30 last night.

Hi redleech! You must have been fishing your honey hole again on Ririe. Just wanted to thank you for the fishing tips and showing me how you rigged up your tackle for those kokanee and perch when I met you a few weeks ago. Many more happy fishing memories for you and your friends.

Went to Ririe this morning with my Dad and Nephew. Got there about when it started getting light, headed away from the crowds, on the way out there ran into some coworkers and they already had several on the ice. We waited and waited with nothing. Spotted Windriver and Steelfisher, shot the breeze with them for awhile. Saw my coworkers leaving and honking their horn at us saying they had their limits (about 8:30, JERKS). Went back and waited and waited, never really found the Kokanee. Two schools came by, and only stayed for about 30 seconds not enough time to get your jig at the proper depth [frown]. Ended up catching some trout, perch, and a sucker, so I can't complain to much. On the way out talked to at least 10 groups and sounded like they were having a slow time at it as well. I hope there will be some better reports than mine today, just wasn't our day for the Kokanee.[frown][frown][frown].. Nice to run into some fellow BFT members put some faces to the names. We should organize a BFT tournament or something get to know everybody.

I got my kids up at the crack of dawn made the traditional stop at Maverick for choclate milk and donuts and then headed to the lake.

We were drilling holes at 6:30. My son was putting in the lines as I baited them when he started screaming that the Kokanee were right under the ice. He pulled up two and my younger son pulled up one. Then they were gone. I wasn't worried since the last week has been so hot. I thought that it was just a matter of time until they came in. I was wrong. Picked up a couple more lone kokanee before noon for a total of five. In the downtime we managed to get seven perch and four trout commit.

We were fishing in 35-50 ft of water with swedish pimples and various small ice flies in pink, and chartruse.

Just goes to show how fast you can become spoiled. We ended up with 16 fish and it seemed ultra slow. Guess I need to eat humble pie and return to normal earthly ice fishing.

It was great to meat several BFT members out on the ice. Steelfisher (my neighbor) came out to meet me. He caught one Kokanee to keep the skunk off before he had to go. As Maghunter said, he and his dad Magdaddy were fishing nearby they stopped by to say hi. Pokeyfisher also stopped in to introduce himself. I saw redleech out there also. To all those who came by to put a face with a name thanks for stopping by.

We should have a BFT get together. The ice is a perfect place for social fishing. We will have to plan way ahead of time next year.
