My 18 year old son and my father just returned from an icefishing trip to Mackay Reservoir today. Fished out from the dam 75 yards or so. Fished anywhere from 10 feet down to bottom. My son caught 8 kokanee and three brook trout. Kept his limit of six kokanee and two brook trout which have their separate limit of twenty-five brooks. Saw one brookie caught through the ice that measured about 14 to 15" and about 3/4 to a pound in weight. Caught two or three kokanee on a dark red paddlebug with silver sparkles. Caught rest of kokanee on a three sinker rig on a hook painted with flourescent underwater glow paint by Genz. Ice was thick enough that it came up to the bottom of the gas auger engine when they punched thru the ice. Day was nice until the wind came up in the afternoon. Seems the wind goddess up at the north end of the valley was stiring the air up. My father caught only one small rainbow he returned to the water. Ice is still firm around the edges with good integrity. Wish I could have been fishing with them but I had to work. Kokanee were measured at 11 to 12-1/2" and fatter than at Ririe this year. I was impressed. Hope to post pictures at a later date.
