Boise River - Round 2 - W/pics
#1
I fished the Boise River again and had an even better day today than yesterday. I arrived at another one of my old spots around 12:00. It was a little windier today but the fishing was still excellent. Right away I hooked into a fun little brown. I snapped a quick pic and continued upstream. As I moved upstream I caught a couple average rainbows and a couple of whitefish. I continued moving on in search for a bigger fish. I found another nice run and cast out. Right away my indicator went down. I thought I was snagged so I pulled up to try get it undone. Then my line started shooting out real quick so I knew I had hooked into a decent fish. I saw him roll a couple times and could tell it was a real nice fish. As I brought him in a little closer I started thinking it was maybe one of the steelhead that had been planted in November. I finally landed him and turns out it wasn't a steelhead, just a really nice sized beautiful rainbow. Fish was somewhere between 25"-27". No idea about the girth but it was definitely a porker. Snapped a couple pics and quickly released it. What an awesome way to end my trip to Boise. Every time I fish the Boise I have a really great time.
Tight lines...

Nice looking fish. Looks like a great day of fishing. That big one looks like a CutBow with the white tipped fins. Very good looking fish.

I am very impressed. That trout is HUGE!! I catch quite a few browns around town all the way down to Star. I have picked up a few 18" rainbows here and there but nothing like that. Well done.

The Boise river is quite a gem. The little ponds along the river also hold some big fish of different species.

Many consider the whitefish a garbage fish but you should post some of your whitefish catches on here, too. I can post some of my 2 foot sucker pics but I am afraid of the backlash of putting one of those ugly faced critters on this site...

Yes the Boise River really is a gem. If it had some different regulations it could be a really incredible fishery. It is where I grew up fly fishing so I really love it a lot. It is always full of surprises.
As far as the whitefish go, I love catching them. They are most definitely not a trash fish. I had quite a few of them jumping clear out of the water. They are just so darn squiggly that it gets hard to take a picture of them because they never hold still. I didn't catch any big ones this time but I have pulled out some monster whities in the past. Whitefish can make a slow day into a really fast action day. They are usually fairly easy to find and are very willing to take a fly. I have caught some real nice suckers out of the Boise too. I love catching anything that puts up a good fight regardless of what they look like. Post away Smile

Heck, I doubt their's any pride on this site where type of fish caught is concerned. Heck, I've seen posts of people saying they caught goldfish in Rexburg. Post away. Maybe that's what we need, a seperate thread for peoples sucker pics! Besides, I believe that there is a sucker fishing tournament at Blackfoot Res coming up soon [Smile]

[laugh] That was a clever way to put that, let's not open that can of worms again![sly] I might enter in that tourney this year too. My buddies do it, it sounds like a blast.

FFF,

On your comments, and being short on time, I decided to give it a try. I started at the Linder bridge (north) and headed down stream as there were several guys/gals bank yanking right at and under the bridge. I wadded through a deep slow hole almost to the top of my waders before I made it through and found a nice little run where I caught a white fish on a Pheasant tail.

Moved to a new run and picked up 5 more right away. Then I hooked up on some debry in the water and lost my last PT. I put on a bead head Prince but didn't get any more out of that run, so I moved on. Just about lost confidence in the prince since I hadn't caught anything on it when I finally started catching again.

Moved back up to the bridge and found that everyone was gone, so I tried under the bridge but didn't get anything. Kept moving up and picked up several more white fish right near the bridge, then finally caught a three trout (smaller, about 10-12 inches) and a few more white fish.

Ending up catching at least 16 fish (and lost several more) in about 4 hours. A good portion of the 4 hours wasn't even fishing. It was spent moving from hole to hole, getting lost, etc. Anyway it was a lot of fun and is something I will try again soon.

FFF, let me know if you are interested in hitting it as a duo. I am thinking I'd like to try near the Star bridge. Or, that floating in the drift boat from Linder to Star sounds like a lot of fun also.

Glad to hear you made it out and got into some fish. The Linder area has some nice bows and rainbows but it gets hit really hard by a lot of people. Like you said I have mostly caught little rainbows and whitefish down there, but I have hooked into a couple nice sized browns. I usually stick to the river a little bit higher up than that. Next time I am in town I'll definitely let you know so we can hit the river. The Boise River is a lot of fun to fish and you can always have a fun day with the whities if the trout aren't real cooperative. Nice report.
