Steelhead Report 3-27-28
#1
Went Steeheading for the second time ever this weekend. There was four of us, and all of us are rookies to steelheading. We headed for Salmon and found a couple of spots on the Lemhi hole first thing in the morning. I hooked a small male right off and was hopeful it was the start of a great day. My buddy's dad hooked a real nice one but it broke off after a long fight. Then my buddy hooked a 5 pound hen. The fishing slowed down after that nobody around us was doing much so we decided to go up stream to see if there was anything going on. We went up to 11 mile and stopped and talked to everybody we saw on the way up there and nobody had caught anything all day (or so they claimed). So we went below Salmon to Tower Hole - everybody fishing there claimed fishing had been slow all day. Finished up the day there without even a bite. Saturday morning we headed back to Lemhi hole way before sunrise and there were already cars lined up in the sweet spots. We fished there until about 3 p.m. with two more small steelies in our nets and a couple more that got off. We started for home and stopped at Hat Creek and fished for a couple more hours without a bite and people we talked to hadn't done much up there all day. Four fish total for two days, could have been worse. It was a fun trip even though I was hoping for faster fishing and to hook into a big one. But I did complete one of my goals to complete my Pacific Salmon Grand Slam. I will have to try it again so I can get a picture with a big one.

"Fast Steelhead fishing" ...Isn't that an oximoron[laugh].

If you don't mind me asking what methods were you using?

I think you guys had an excellent trip. I went 4 times before I landed a steelhead. Some guys fish for years before landing one. Once you have some success it really gets into your blood. Good report.

Mostly bouncing bottom with helgies and corkies with a fly dropper. We also tried eggs, pink worms and anything else we had heard people using before. I figured out the best way to see what somebody who is catching fish is using. Just cast over their line and then volunteer to untangle it. Works really good, a drift boat anchored near us and started catching fish so I used this technique switched my gear to copy theirs and started catching suckers. [crazy]
