Salmon Falls Creek Reservoir, Norton Bay
#1
[fishin]Got blessed to fish with a friend that it has been around a year since we last fished together. His work schedule has interferred with our fishing time. He gets off at 10 am on Saturdays.
Yesterday we got together around 11 am and headed out the wind had us worried, it was 20 mph at the TF airport, but a little wearther station at Rogerson said 7 mph. As we got to the bay the water looked smooth, smooth for SFC.
"Breeze" was out of the south, partially cloudy, water temp was 41 and you can tell it is runoff time, debry everwhere and muddy.
Jeff was using a ducktail, I had on my fore & aft that I had tied up 3 wks ago.
Marked fish but wasn't sure that it wasn't debry in the water. Had my 1st fish on at the same point I had results last time there. I had some real good tugs going on when it came up and splashed the surface and after showing it was a nice trout shook loose. Really I pulled to hard[Wink]
I headed to the south as Jeff headed to the north and around to Big Sandy Bay, I was heading for where last year I had been involved with some early walleye. I was draging one roadrunner with a worm, (Last weekend at CJ Strikes hot lure for perch) and my fly. As happens all to often when your hugging the bank the runner got sanged and in going to get in undone my fly went in the prop of the minnkota. You may ask why do I fish with 2 rodss? cause it's legal[crazy]
Since the Breeze had picked up I put on a blk curlly tail with a worm and started heading back. Finally had another fish on, it stayed deep and just kindof sat there, May have been a walleye but it too pulled free.
Continued on back and started marking columns of fish, Crappie, but like usual I tied many lures flies bait and nothing, when am I going to figure these SFC crappie out?[mad]
The 2 way came to life with a call from Jeff, he was already back at the Jeep and so I headed back. Jeff never even got a bump and the bank fishermen only had one on the stringer. Another slow day at SFCR and we were skunked.[:/] And guess what the camera was in the jeep glove box all the time, sorry no pic's this trip.

Great report even if the catching wasn't that good. I have tangled my fly line in the trolling motors many times. Then Steelfisher did it last year while we were bass fishing. If can get costly if it ripps up you line.

I am not a Crappie expert in fact the only time I have done well for them was last year at Oxbow. They were so thick that we couldn't get down to the bass at times.

Well brother there is always next time. Praise God you got to finally fish with your friend. That alone made it worth the effort I'm sure.

Whats the elevation at SFC? It is pretty high isn't it? And COLD this time of year too I'll bet/

The wind is just HOWLING like crazy here in Nampa/Caldwell today & I even saw a few flakes of snow. I don't know what happened to spring. It was warm for a little while them poof! I was hoping for some warmer weather to get the water at Lake Lowell to start warming up. It will open for boats in two weeks![Smile]

You think those crappie would act the same as anywere else. What is the feed at SFC? Have you tried bait?

Nice slabs. I am going to have to commit to driving a little and learning how to catch some someday.

Rogerson, Idaho is 4911 ft so SFCR water level is lower. The water was same as CJ 41 deg and there was some "breeze". I did try some of my goto stuff for CJ but no takers Saturday. I did have a minnow in a jar on and it got stole but no other hits when I replaced it.

I was fishin for 'em when Jeff called on the 2 way and said he was at the Cherokee so I did not work them for more than 1/2 hr.

I am getting some of the fly slip bobbers this next week thanks to Flygodess that could be interesting. I want to fish those small fly's and see what the still water fishin style is like.

I have been thinking the same thing. I was thinking the Preston area. I have caught Bluegill and Perch before, but not on purpose. [Wink] Time to learn something new I guess. I have always wanted to taste different fish. I love Perch.

No crappie at CJ eh? I heard they were catching quite a few the week before I went up the snake river arm a ways.

We make a three day trip every year to the Preston area for bluegill. There is nothing like twitching a sponge spider on a three weight and having a big slab slam it. lb for lb panfish are the best freshwater fighters. You just have to downsize your gear to make it interesting.

Hmmm, I have been looking at a 2 or 3 wt for brookies and perch. This may just be the reason I need to buy one or build it.
