Several people I have talked to today, and one boat dealer, have told me that I am required to purchase boat insurance and have proof of insurance in my boat when operating it on Utah waters.
Is that really true?
If so, my little tin-bin and it's 15 hp motor have been illegal for a long time.
Can anyone point me to the "written" requirements? The law?

I am not computer savy enough to post the thread, but if you go to Utah State Parks and then to Safety Equipment Checklist the very last item states the insurance requirements.

I'm not for sure Ralph but I think it goes by the HP of your motor whether it's a required or not.

Hey Ralph, this is one of those questions that comes up often, there is a recent post about it on the Utah Boat and motor boat board. You do not need insurance unless your motor is 50 hp or larger. I'll look for a link and post it if some one does not beat me to it.

New Liability Insurance Requirements for Motor Boats
Effective May 1, 2006, each motorboat, including personal watercraft (PWC), is required to carry owner's or operator's liability insurance when operated on Utah waters. A motorboat equipped with an engine of less than 50 horsepower is exempt from this requirement.
Proof of insurance must be carried on board the motorboat whenever it is in operation. The minimum insurance requirements are: $25,000 / $50,000 bodily injury / death - $15,000 property damage or $65,000 combined minimum per accident.
A motorboat, owned by a non-Utah resident and registered in the non-resident's state, must meet its state's insurance requirements or have 90 days to comply with Utah's liability insurance requirements.

Here is something to think about. (Talk to your agent about specifics) And I am NOT an insurance salesman...
Liability insurance is a good idea no matter what. And for the boat you described it will be very cheap (I would guess $7.00 per month).
The issue is damage that you could cause to others and/or their property, including on the highway. My agent told me that the moment a boat becomes detached from your vehicle it is no longer covered by the policy on your truck/car. If it causes any damage, you will pay for it out of your pocket. On the water, any damage or injury your boat causes comes out of your pocket. Imagine the potential liability...
While it is unlikely, accidents do happen. I pay for the peace of mind. I highly recommend it.
BTW - I also have a 14ft tin can with a 15HP

Insurance came from the days of the mafia. You paid insurance to keep from getting knocked off in one way or the other.
I'm not real red hot on paying insurance, but if it isn't too expensive, it does make sense especially in a world of people who will pull the trigger on suing you if you look at them funny let alone crash into them or run them over with your boat.

When I put my new Motor on, I was told 50 HP and above. I made it into the Insurence bracket by 15 Hp (I have a 65 HP) [frown] I did not need it with my old dud of 35 HP.
I insurence however is very cheap. and I pay by the year.[cool]
