Rabbit Gulch Tubing Report 9-10-09
#1
[cool][#0000ff]4 of us tubing and tooning types ganged up on Bunny Gulch this morning. Mid fifties morning temp with water temp at 64. Warmed up to 67 by 1 pm departure. Only light breezes off and on through the morning, with long stretches of glass. Fine fun.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]There was Wildcat94, Waljustia, Parrmark and my own self. Got launched by about 7:30 and everybody went in different directions. I outsmarted myself and headed to the shallow end, figuring it was time for some predators to start chasing perchlets in skinny water. WRONGO. I wasted a lot of time in optimistic prospecting before working back to the deeper water and smacking some perchies. Lots of smaller fish today, with only a few basket fish (over 10 inches) in the mix. No wallies for me today. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]But, I did get in a good "shakedown" cruise on my replacement Fat Cat...after retiring the road kill victim from a couple of weeks ago. All of the new PVC designs worked great, as did the new molded plastic seat from a stack chair. I caught fish on several different lures, but again the "Fligs" produced the most keepers. I ended up keeping about 7 and tossing back a fair number of smaller perch. Nobody caught any smallies today.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Wildcat94 got two walleyes, with his 21 incher taking top honors for big fish. Also got a fair basket of porky perch. Waljustia got a couple of walleyes also, including a 15 incher as his largest. He also scored enough decent perch for a good meal. Parrmark brought in a basket of 20 perch, although some of them were smaller than others of us might "discard". But, as nice and healthy as those perchies are even the smaller ones gave up nice fillets.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]You could sure tell that the Classic Tournament is coming up. Quite a few boats working over Bunny Gulch today. The ones I talked to had not enjoyed much success on anything besides pesky perch. Hope Mama Nature behaves and doesn't mess up the festivities.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I think we all had a good time and enjoyed fishing with each other. Some new meetups in our little group and we will probably do it again some more.[/#0000ff]

Great report. Thanks to you, Bryce, and Dave for a fun trip![cool] Good times with some good guys.

You can bill me for the filleting fees.

Oh, and for the record those smaller fish were deep hooked - I had them sucking my Thrasher down to their tailfeathers.[Wink] Guess I had better stick with a jig type setup next time.

[#500000]Great report! It sounds like your new design for the rod holder worked out. I might have to make a new one for my SFC if you like yours that way. I should run up to Starvation too. I loaded everything up and went to the Knolls on Monday morning, dark thirty. There was a pretty brisk breeze coming right in to shore and the midges were NASTY thick, so I didn't even bother launching. The truck is still loaded and rearin' to go. Fried perch and maybe a walleye... Where do I find the road to Rabbit Gulch? Is the tourney this weekend?[/#500000]

[cool][#0000ff]Yes indeedy. The new PVC design worked as well as I had hoped. But, I need to work on the apron. Building a new one.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Sorry about the Knolls. When the bugs are bodacious and the onshore "breezes" are blowing it is not a nice place to launch.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Yes, the tourney is this weekend. But, I am guessing from what the pre-fishers were finding that there will not be a lot of anglers crowding tubers in the normal spots. They will be hammering the few other spots that have been producing larger walleyes. Still plenty of perch available for the perch jerkers...along with the occasional lost walleye...or those that come to Bunny Gulch to get away from the bottom bouncin' armada.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Here are a couple of maps of Rabbit Gulch. One showing how to get there and the other with some details of the layout...tuber-oriented.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]You definitely need good sonar to find the fish. There are fish all the way from 14' to 30' deep. As a general rule, the best fishing for larger fish yesterday was in 25 to 30 feet of water. But, there are also a few toads chasing small perch and crawdads in shallower water. About the only real schools of fish we found all seemed to be small ones. The bigger ones are spread out and that is why you need sonar. If you find an area with several in the same area, toss over a marker buoy and fish that area until the bite stops. You can fish a long time between bites and then once you find a "honey hole" you can fill your limit with bigguns.[/#0000ff]

[#502800]Wow, those are great maps. One reason I'm anxious to get out again is I just got my sonar set up for my tube, the one I generally use for ice fishing, and Bunny Gulch will be perfect for that. Thanks for the info! [/#502800]

[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]You are right. That area is one of the best to put a new sonar through the paces. A good unit will show the weed beds and fish hiding on top of the weeds and even inside the weeds. My new Humminbird 565 does a great job. Many of the fish I have caught since buying it have been the result of seeing a single fish on the bottom and dropping down to it.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]One area to focus on will be the outside (channel side) edges of the line of buoys to the north of the launch and camp areas. They mark a long ridge of rock that is almost exposed and will be out of the water soon as the lake level is dropping. The NW corner of those bouys almost always has fish and you can work east and west along the edge, fishing different depths, for perch, smallies and wallies. Like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get.[/#0000ff]

[#500000]Alright then, I'll plan on being at Bunny Gulch at about 7:00 Sat. morning. I don't usually go on weekends, but I'll make an exception. If anyone else wants to show up there too, that would be fun, otherwise I'll be solo. [cool] I'll be the old fart in the red Dodge Ram with the YEE HAA license plate and the tricked out Super Fat Cat tube and the exasperated look on my face, like "where'd all the fish go?" [crazy]

[cool][#0000ff]Yeah...you and everybody else. We all know there are some bigguns in there. But nobody seems to be able to find them...or get them to wanna play.[/#0000ff]

I might try to join ya in the drift boat. We will be joined by the tournament guys as well, it might be a big mistake but ya never know. I wish I was fishing in the tournament too. Just dont have a partner.[Sad] I would be out later in the day if I do make it. I will be in the red drift boat with the two dogs hangin out in the back helping me land fish. Good luck if I dont see you. I might be launching in knights hollow because I know where the fish are without electronics and I have caught a couple nice fish there this year.
