Getting excited for trout season like me?

I was reading the ndow website and found some exciting news. Trout season is just around the corner for urban ponds in vegas. I went out today and bought a bunch of trout lures and some power putty, I'm gonna be ready plan on hitting Flsp,Sunset,Lorenzi soon as stocking begins.

URBAN PONDS
The final catfish plant of the year will take place at the urban ponds sometime today. If the current weather trend holds, trout stocking activities should begin the last week of October or the first week of November. The key is water temperature.


Does anyone have any stories/experiences at any of the local las vegas urban ponds? I personally fished them for years with pretty good success, floyd lamb being my favorite.

I have been fishing the vegas ponds for trout for some years now. I think I was 10yo (25 yo now) or so when I started going to sunset park/FLSP to fish for trout. If you are gonna bait fish, there is only one word you need to remember... Velveeta!.. thats right the cheese! I cannot tell you how many times I went out there on a busy day like saturday or sunday and had people throwing powerbait not but a few feet from where I was casting and asking me what the hell im using because I was catching fish 10/1 compared to them. Just make sure you get the smallest block of velveeta they make and that will keep you going for a few trips. Nowadays I usually head out there with prepared velveeta. Ill take a little jar and melt the velveeta cheese in the microwave. Then I throw some garlic poweder in it and mix it up real nice, then throw it in the fridge to cool. Last year I went with a buddy of mine who never fishes and seriously I think we gave half our bait away because everyone at the pond was asking us for some because we were the only ones catching anything[cool].

As far as lures go.. I only carry one kind of lure for the stocker trout at the ponds. I have had 40+ fish days with it and it is the method I use the majority of the time. The 1/4 Kastmaster in silver. The best action with em is when you tie them straight to the line w/o a swivel. Just toss it in and countdown letting it sink, trying different depths. When you find the number/depth they are at, just keep retrieving at that same depth until the bite stops then try a different depth.

This year I am going to try and just flyfish for em =)

I have spent some years fishing Sunset, and what worked best for me was a wooly bugger-
black, olive, brown- just stay with the natural colors.






Its an easy fly to tie, if you are into that. Its also very available, and cheap to buy.

You can kill em fly-fishing, but when I didn't have my fly rod, I would just tie on a wooly bugger, and put one or two split shot 3 or 4 feet up the line. Its kinda awkward to cast at first, but you'll figure it out.

Just keep an erratic retrieve. Fast and jerky, and the trout come flying after it in swarms. Ive seen entire schools of trout fighting over it.

James also has a proven method. He is right about the velveeta. Ive seen it out-fish just about every color of powerbait out there. And a kastmaster will definitely get the job done.

The wife only like to fish with me at the urban ponds and only during trout season so she keeps asking me when will they start stocking. It's nice to know that maybe it will be at the end of the month

Thank you guys for the tips. I have only one question how do you rig your velveeta cheese? I assume on a bait hook underneath a bobber. Last time I remember using velveeta it was really runny. Have any problems with it falling off?

Good point.. wooly buggers are king when it comes to flies in my book! Just make sure if you are going to catch and release to smash the barb down on the hook to make for an easy release.

cold creek pond with a small roostertail spinner is my favorite, we usually take the grill and some steaks and make a day of it. even took fire wood and had a fire for a couple hours when it dark after fishing, down the hill from the pond.

might be a while before i fish though. my desert mule deer season starts nov. 5th. i am used to hunting in montana so i really hope it cools way down and starts snowing, sorry haha

The guys that fish there every day manage to catch a bass every now and then fishing for trout. They also some times chase trout that are being caught.

Ok its official called the number provided and was delighted to hear on oct 22 there will be trout at the lamb[cool] hopefully I can make it out there. I have been out there a couple times these last month only catching one dinky bass, mostly scoping things out trying out a few new lures. Unfortunately I lost three off them on the back pond[crazy] it has been really low compared to last year. The main pond has not produced anything for me lately either. Hopefully when the trout start to be dumped I can get my fishing fix[fishin] Ill be sure to post my first seasons catch on the boards and you guys do your part and post pics and reports on your trout adventures around the valley until then see you guys out there.

Lamb is gonna be packed this weekend.. i think ill just head out to cold creek til it starts to die down. Being shoulder to shoulder with people fishing just doesnt sound fun to me. Let me know how busy it is out there.

I know of at least one church picnic happening on the 24th at Floyd Lamb. I'm gonna try and be out there early but I might not wake up in time after fishing Willow Beach Friday morning and working Friday evening.

how many people are up at cold creek when yo go? I heard no one really goes. Its so small I don't see there being much room for too many people to fish it. How many trout are you allowed? I wonder many do they dump in?

when i have gone, there has been as many as 15 people and few times we were the only ones there. after it gets cold up there people dont want to have to wear big coats to catch stocked fish i think. i like it. i think i am going to go scout for deer this weekend and bring a pole. the only bad thing bout it is they stock like 500 in it and thats it for a few months up there, while the town ponds get fish every week or two. Cold Creek looks like an awesome place to get a deer. How will you be scouting? Will you be 4x4ing back in the hills or just from the pond?
