lots of shad lake mead
#1
i recently just started fishing lake mead and between govt.wash and rocky point i see so many shad hitting the top of the water and just schooling. now are there always this many shad year round or is it just that time of the year. in the last month of fishing here i've been able to hook or net shad every time im out. today i caught 6 stripers and 1, 2lb bass, all the striper were bigger than the bass. there was a really good boil going on around the rocky point lookout area around sunrise for a good 3 hours off and on..

i cant wait to get the boat fixed, im tired of hiking up and down these dam mountains to get to shore.

Hello Largemouthbass,

Yes it is that time of the year. They are in close early and late in the day. This will be pattern until middle of December then they will stay deep until they come in to spawn in March or April.

I just found out we have Gizzard shad in the lake now. The NDOW does two gill netting per year. The first one early this year they netting a few up by Temple Bar. The second one in October they netted them everywhere. I think 85% of fish they netted were gizzard shad.

They can grow up to 16 inches and weigh up to 3 lbs. So know we have Threadfin and Gizzard Shad for the fish to feast on.

Also the trout plants start up on Lake Mead this week I believe.

I wonder if that means in a couple years we will break the state record with the new shad.

Caught a 12'' shad at Vegas Wash a while back. Tossed it back. Thought it was a threadfin. Next time I'll take a closer look at it!

we caught these things last year. they kinda look like a carp but had some differences then big ones. they acted weird too, when we hooked them they would swim straight for shore and not fight at all. and they were in a school and easy to catch. are they just baby carp or shad or something else?

Well that is news!

Really?!?!? 85% are gizzard shad? Where did all the threadfin go? Did they note a healthy population?

Where was the report on this? I'd love to look into this more.

The information was given by a quest speaker at the Nevada Striper Club meeting in November. The gentleman is a biologist for the hatchery. Also Allan Cole had posted a thread on his web site.

Yes, Did not do well as I wanted but still fun anyway.
Big fish was only 5.2lbs and top weight was 9.5lbs for 4 fish weigh in. The big fish was caught from boulder beach casting from shore.

I just had a sweet Bass Pro shopping trip, and am ready to take on EVERYONE!!! [Wink]

Hello whizzle,

Our next meeting is December 10th at Lake Mead lounge in Henderson. The tournament starts 5:00am sat the 12th and it ends sun 13th at noon. The weigh in starts from 12:00 to 1:00pm sunday at the Las Vegas wash fish cleaner. But we have the weigh in down at the covered picnic area.

If entered in the tournament you can fish from anything that floats safely. You can fish with anyone or by yourself. You can fish anywhere in Lake Mead above the Dam. We have been thinking about a river tourny one month a year. You fish as much as you like no time requirements. Just the start and stop times of tournament.

Club Member ship $30 a year includes all children until they need a license. Tournament entry fee $30 for each adult. All children that do not need a license No charge. There is also a big fish prize to enter $6 dollars. We also supply food and drinks at weigh in. Hot dogs, burgers or subs. So even if you do not fish come on down and check out the weigh in and get something to eat.
