Callville Friday 11-20-09
#1
Went out to callville after sleeping in past my alarm... ended up getting out there about 9am.

Went out to try out my new drift sock on the yak- Those things rock!

I started out with my ultralight setup. Wanted to finesse some bass on the 4lb line. Got my first two on a secret weapon.

The second was just a bit smaller than this one

I got a third smallie that was easily over 2 lbs, and it was jumpin all over the place. One hell of a fight on an ultralight setup.

She came in close, and dove for a rock ledge. As soon as that line touched the rock, it parted. I tried turning her head, but i had no control with that 4lb line.

After that Sad moment, I switched up to my 8lb rig, and went to work.

This beautifully colored fish came shortly after, and I decided to quit while I was ahead.

All fish came on the mystery bait. (no it wasn't live shad).

Looks like time well spent. I guess we all have secrets.

It depends on the time of year- More largemouth in the spring- a mixed bag in the summer, more smallies in the fall and winter...

But thats just because of my fishing style. Im sure other peoples catch rates are different.

It also takes different approaches to catch a largemouth or smallmouth.

I've noticed that the 2 different species key in on different baits a lot. I can catch only smallies on one thing, and then throw something else in the same exact spot and only catch largemouth.

So, it is all subjective, but I have landed quite a few smallies this year- maybe two smallies for every one largemouth.

For sure. That is one of the coolest looking smallies I've seen at Mead.
