i went out a couple days last year with a new ice rod that i bought but i didnt have a reel just my regular reel that i took off my rod, and i couldnt catch a fish for the life of me. i bought a couple of other ice rods with ice reels and ice line 3 lb test i think and couldnt keep fish off those 2 rods but still couldnt catch a fish on my other rod. so i then put some light line on that reel and bingo. so in my mind the light line makes all the diffrence expecialy late in the season as the fish get a bit picky and lathargic

You might go back into the archive to last winter, we had a good discussion on this topic.

Archives and FAQ's are good resources but it seems like you learn something new each year a subject comes back up . . . plus the board gets a lot more reads and posts if it gets hashed back over by the people that are here now. JMHO. I wish this board had about 50 more people posting a day. There are some great fishermen here and I really enjoy all the posts that are here! I checked the FAQ's but no one has taken the time to link all of the useful threads. That is a shame. Maybe you could bump the thread up MH??? For me it all depends on what you are fishing for. If I'm chasing Ice Macs I like braid with a Fluoro leader. Most every thing else is 40' or less and I like 4# Super Lines which tend to have a combination of mono and fluoro. When Stren made their Stren Extra Strength I picked up a 3000 yrd spool of 4#. Great line for ice fishing! [signature]

Like I said in the other thread. I have become a big believer in P-line for the very reasons that you mentioned. Super strong, no memory to speak of and relatively small diameter.
I am using it Ice Fishing, and drop-shotting. Windriver [signature]

I've noticed a better catch rate using smaller line say 2-4lb What does your regular reel have on it That might be the difference

It's tough to jig light weight jigs on the end of a rope. [laugh] [signature] |
