Hi everyone, I'm new to this site and just wanted to say hello and ask a question. I usually fish Island Park Res. but it has been pretty slow up there . I'm looking for some different places to go and was wondering if someone could fill me in on what the story is with Gem State Dam. First of all can you fish there and then what are the particulars[species, ice conditions, bait used etc.] Any input would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forum. Can't help much with Gem Lake since I have never fished, but there are those that do and I am sure they will help you out.

Welcome to the boards. I assume you mean the Gem Lake Dam south of I.F.??? The best fishing is below the dam when the ice permits. There used to be some guys that would keep a large tent down there on the ice. I was talking to the water master and they had to test the gates. They tried for two days to locate the owners who only fish at night. No luck so rumor has it they washed it away. Travel light as you have to cross a lot of rocks to get down there but the fishing for Rainbows and Browns can be very good at times! Always listen for the Warning Horns. The do release water from time to time!

I've fished above the dam at times but never did very well during the winter months. have seen some good size perch pulled out of there (supposedly there anyway). Could always try the marina boat ramp on the east side of the river and then walk up river about 50 yds and go into the pond/diversion area there. just don't go by land. it's all posted and they get cranky about people crossing it. As long as you take the river though they can't say a thing and they're usually polite then.
