third straw water inlet project

I found this article from the newspaper with a video link about the water inlet project at lake mead. Below the barge in the lake is where the water inlet pipe will be, but they first are using a vacuum to suck out 40 to 50,000 cubic yyards of silt and then they will blast about 10,000 yards of rock to create a pit 50 to 60 feet deep. The they plan to pour a concrete base for the inlet structure.

This article is from Dec. 13 2009 so I don't how far along they are or they started blasting yet. I don't know but blasting a hole 50ft wide and 50ft. deep sounds like it might effect the fishing. Or even vacuuming 50,000yrds of silt. Maybe stripers like underwater explosions I don't know, but i doubt it. On the other hand I went out early last week and that barge was brightly lit up which I do know attracts fish at night. Anybody tried fishing near there at night? Or does anybody know how far along they are and at which stage of they work they are at?

That is one massive project going on. I wonder what effect it will have on the fishing?

I saw the barge about an hour before sunrise and it was lit up. I don't know if its stays lit all night 7 days a week, but if it does and is as bright as it looked from the road I'll bet the fishing at night anywhere near it is pretty good. If they haven't started blasting yet. The nights are pretty long this time of year maybe 13 hours or so. I was also wondering if the times when the dam is generating power has a positive effect on the feeding of the fish like on other lakes. I was told a while ago that lake mead was too for that to have any effect, but now that it is less than half the size it used to be maybe it does now.

I don't know about the dam affecting the fishing. If it does, maybe just in the canyon, but I've never heard anyone talk about it, or seen anything different.

As far as fishing near the crane, they have a pretty big buoy line around it, and I don't think you could really get close enough to fish the lights.

Im gonna stay clear of that thing.... who knows how much dynamite is hanging out on board.

Hello Everyone,

Yes it stays lit up all night. I think I might ask the workers for a stick or two of dynamite. Maybe I can catch something then[pirate]. Maybe things will pick up soon! I still think they have too much food and they can tell fake from the real thing. Maybe start trolling real bait?

I say, if anyone can net a nice fat gizzard shad- 10" or 12" - hook it through the lips on a 5/0 circle hook, and slow troll it around... maybe we will see a nice fish.

If only we could slow troll a live 12" rainbow trout...[:p] [angelic]

Is anybody finding schools of shad, or are they all deep?

If they're gonna blast under water like it sounds, it will kill any fish within probably a 100 yd. radius. The shock wave busts 'em up internally & the air bladder usually expands & they float to the top. The gulls will have a bonanza.
