As I walk down the dock to my boat in the mornings, I look into the shallow
water just to be amazed by the shear quainty of fry perch, blue gill, crappie
and Bass that are seaking shelter there from the sun and preditors that await
them in the deeper water just 50 feet away. Just by this one observation
you know that Black Lake is very healthy and the fishing will be great for years
to come.
My Lady and I vacations there last week for seven days. The camping was great
with the Mclear's. I highly recomend their accomodations. Right on the water
and everything you need for fishing including a great fish cleaning station. I
will post a link to their site at the end of the report as well as for Black Lake.
As you can see by my upbeat we had some really good fishing and for a change
some great fishing weather. The Crappie fishing was excellent, but best worked
on a drift. Our rigging was simple. ultra light rod and reel and 4 lb. test spider
wire. A 1/32 jig head tipped with plastics, every color seemed to work tipped with
minnows, chunks of worms or just plain white plastic with a pink jig head. In
windy conditions ( 10-15 MPH) extra split shot had to be added to get into the strike
zone.
It was good we used spider wire because we also hooked into Walleye, Bass
and Catfish on the drift. Our friends from PA. Ralph and Mel. also brought in two
Gar. Another fisherman was realing in a nice Crappie when it was attacked by
a 40 inch muskie. You never know what to expect, except awsome fishing.
The Crappie have to be 9 inches to be a keeper and you best adhere to it
because the local game warden were out making sure you play by the rules.
We caught a lot of 9" crappie and a good number of 10" and 11" were also
brought in. Some up to 14" are also around.
The lake is really not very deep at it's deepest parts it gets to 30' but averages
around 16'. Don't look for any thermal change because it is a constant temp top
to bottom. the average temp for the week for the water was 69 degs.
This sets up for some great Bass fishing as well. A number of tournaments
are held there each year. Large mouth and small.
There is a lot of information on the web site and I recommend that you visit it
