Henrys Lake
#1
I've heard a lot about Henry's lake, all of it good. I am planning on being there memorial weekend. Unfortunately, I don't have a boat. Does Henry's have any good shore fishing?

That weekend will depend largely on 2 things. One is how late the ice comes off. If it's like the last 2 years when in came off days before the opener it will probably be good. If it comes off 3 weeks earlier, fish may have moved deeper by then. The 2nd is how many nimrods show up. If you have a million people that aren't courteous, have no regard for regs, personal space or common sense it can make for a long weekend. On the other hand you can always move and try to find a spot where they aren't.

Memorial weekend = Nimrods wherever you go!

Thank you for your advice. I just wanted to make sure that there are shore spots to fish from, as I heard it has fairly steep banks. Hopefully the ice has retreated by then!

If the ice comes off late it will be good, I really don't think thats going to happen but we will see. There are lots of places on the shore to fish other then the two places everyone fishes. I don't know why people have to fish the exact same areas together.[crazy]

There is nothing more frustrating than 6-7 fisherman right next to each other. The Provo River comes to mind.......

I'll try and seclude myself.

It would be great if there were only 6-7 people fishing one area. Last year it was more like 30-40 in one small area. I even saw a guy push a small boy out of the way to fish where he was. Needless to say that guy got an earful, and almost a fist in the mouth. When we were in the boat out on the lake it was awesome, but when we got close to shore it was rediculous. If you go just expect to combat fish, and be respectful and you will have a good time.

The banks are only steep where the natural fishing is. Then you have the yahoos who snag spawners from every dock sticking out in the water depending on the time of ice out. Either way it isn't pretty to be on the bank at Henry's Lake.

The fishing better be good for that kind of competition

Our family ran our cattle on Websters before the first house was ever built there. 4 generations fishing Henry's. Today I'd advise a Toon or a boat. Roping down the cliffs is tough sledding and you still could have company on every rock sticking out from the cliff. The places where you used to be able to bank fish over by the county dock are mostly silted in and the outlet is mostly private property now. You might try the cow pasture over by Red Rock on the other side of the cattle pen.by the gravel ramp. Here is my online Henry's Lake fishing map.

Hey I'm in that picture! I'm actually leaning down to land a fish in the light colored hat. That day was certainly a zoo, but all in all I'm definitely glad I did it, and had plenty of fish to show for it .
Here's that same group looking the other direction.

What a joke! I get a little crazy when one or two people cramp my space. Wow, what a great picture.

I must admit it...I'm praying for an early thaw/spawn...we need a few yrs in a row to clear out the madness!!![crazy][crazy] We used to be on the bank early--couldn't get on the water with the toon until 5am...you would only see 15 people possibly in the first couple of hrs...ever since a few late thaws in a row.....easy fishing rumors flew to every adjacent state and before you knew it I was bumping into people when it was still dark!![pirate] Can't blame them though...you rarely have a chance to throw a small egg pattern and your only thought is "I wonder if I can retrieve this without snagging a fish?!"

With those out-of-state fees Henry's is a CASH COW opening weekend![:p] I'll most likely be there but now I'm lucky enough to have a boat to get away from the crowds!

I am betting the ice will be gone early and the fish will all ready be heading out for the deeper holes. I thought about hitting Henry's, but then I thought about the crowds and decided to head south this year. I am in the mood for some warm water fishing and less crowds.

I sure had fun with the kids last year two days after opening. They closed the docks last year so mabey they will start the weekend out that way this year. I have the toon ready to go so I'm hoping for a good year.

In that case stay away from henrys that weekend. The picture is a lighter crowd compared to some spots.

After last year I don't think I will ever go back on the opener. The un-sportsman like conduct, and the outright poaching was too much to take. People lose their minds when they see a big fish. NEVER try to launch a float tube near a dock. People won't let you get it done. they snap you with their flys, and cast their gear at you. I had one person try to outright snag me.
I talked to the F&G about all the bad things that go on there. I said that if they postponed the open day for two weeks I thought that would just about end the madness. I was told that most of henerys fish die of old age. The opening day brewhaha left no impact on the lake. It left an impact on me. I won't do that again. There was a thread here about all the [url "mailto:cr@p"]cr@p[/url] that went on last year.
After speaking with him (Damon Keen) I understand that the docks are closed to fishing. Well at least that is a good start.
From now on I think I will spend the opening day of Henerys at Lake Lowell or some other place far far away. Ron

The docks were absolutely ridiculous last year, people shoulder to shoulder trying to fly fish. It was like running a gauntlet every time we tried to get in the boat. I sure hope they are enforcing the no-fishing-from-the-dock rule. It would make it much more enjoyable for the boaters, and possibly the bank fisherpeople.

There are signs posted on the docks now that say No Fishing From The Docks. It should be much nicer with all the idiots off the docks with their fly rods.

I could not believe watching people back to back fly fishing and not hooking each other. That is just asking for trouble especially since there were at least 12-15 people on the county dock I seen doing this. People just loose all sense of control/humanity at Henry's on opening weekend. They act like cave men that have not eatin all winter. Only difference is theses cave men are dressed in $1500 worth of new gear with $500 fly rods that they have no idea on how to use, but man, they sure look cool.
