Well what can I say? I actually fished somewhere other than Parksville for a change emoBig
Shane and I launched out of Grasshopper around 3 this afternoon and fished til dark.
We decided to try for a big largemouth or smallmouth and get away from the Parksville spots for a day. We ended up catching a few nice largemouth and a really nice 17-18" smallie.
Started the day off fishing docks and bluffs. The current was flowing a little which seemed to help us out a bit. First fish came into the boat happened to be a solid 3.5lb largemouth off a shakey head black trick worm that I cut into the size of a finesse. I stuck with that worm just about the entire time.
We stayed on that bluff for a while and ended up catching 2 more solid largemouth that went 2.5lbs and 3lbs, also a few more small fish in between including a 12" smallmouth. Got down to a deep part of the bluff wall and I decided to mess around with a Float and fly. I was wanting to see that float go down really bad, its been too long! After a couple casts with it I caught a small spot that took it down fast. I loved seeing that float go down, didnt get anymore bites on it after atleast another 10-15 casts.
We cranked up and tried a main river ledge for a while, only had one bite after a good 30 minutes... no good there so we headed back into a few coves coming off Sale creek trying to find a topwater bite. Only had 2 blow ups on the ol spook. One of them was another really nice largemouth that would've gone 4-5lbs that shook off. After only two hits on topwater in 30-45 minutes we decided to hit the bluffs again.
Next fish put into the boat happened to be a nice smallmouth, never got to measure it as I gut hooked the thing. Got a quick picture and let her back. She swam off just fine, but I would say she was any where between 17-18".
Fished down the way ended up only boating a few more. One was our biggest of the day, a largemouth measuring 18.5" and going roughly 4lbs with the belly. So far my biggest largemouth this year I believe. emoToast
Ended up with maybe one more keeper... our best 5 would've been about 15lbs. Just estimating
4lb LM, 3.5lb LM, 3lb SM?, 3lb LM, 2.5lb LM
All in all a great 6 hours of fishing... even though we only caught 13-14 fish, we had some quality. Great day for some one like me who doesnt fish the Tennessee river much. I will be out there more often once the bite starts dying again on Parksville here in a couple weeks. emoThumbsup
