South fork (snake) 5-7-10
#1
Finally got to hit the river again. Fishing was slow fished for about 5 hr. I ended up with 5 but had to work hard to get them. I was using sucker meat. The water level has come up about 1' scents the last time I went. I have noticed that they have been letting a little more water out of the dam every day that could have something to do with the slower fishing. It was nice to get out with out any wind[cool]Here are a couple pic.

I was also wondering If anybody has any info on anybody who shuttles trucks on the lower part of the south fork like from byington to lorenzo. Thanks for any help.

Similar report. Fished the South Fork around Heise in a bunch of different spots, action extremely slow. We ended up catching one fish in a couple hours. Hopefully things pick up soon. Did all the fish run away? Has anyone had better success?

As far as the south fork is concerned, when the fishing gets tough, the fisherman get creative. There are tried and true favs for every fisherman, but when it gets slow it might be time to find a new lure or new style of fishing. Went out w/ my dad and bro and put 20 on the bank on saturday afternoon with a lure that probably nobody has tried. No I will not tell you what it is....you know how it goes. Find a new favorite lure or favorite style.

Welcome to the forum. While I agree with and respect your advice, I hope in the future we can exchange ideas about secret lures or methods especially through P.M.s.

Lol that's a pretty subtle hint.

part of learning new places comes much easier with advice and why it might not be your best method advice or suggestions is always appreciated and often returned when you have questions. If you have a secret lure or dont plan on sharing information why post up?
oh and welcome aboard

I consider the members in this forum my fishing family. Withholding information from the fishing family only alienates yourself from the group. Any tips or tricks to the area that I find I gladly share to everyone on this forum.

I reiterate what drowning flys said,
"f you have a secret lure or dont plan on sharing information why post up?"

Jeez..... Didnt think I would get that kind of reaction. While I agree with you, I think my point was missed. I'm not professing to have a new secret lure will change the way we fish the SF. The point I was making is that many people, especially trout fisherman, get into a rut of using the same old stuff day after day. When that stuff aint workin, it's time for something new, the worst thing that could happen is that you burn $7 on a new offering. Think outside the rapala, spinner, spoon, and bait. Or fish those things in a different way.

Thanks for clarifying and we really do welcome you to the forum. We just tend to watch each others back in order to kill trolls and put out flames.[Smile] Not saying that you are a troll or flaming just saying why we react so harshley. This is a great forum and it only takes a few bad experiences or problems to kill it. [mad]

I probably overreacted not knowing anything about you. Hope to exchange information and have many great discussions in the future.

Sorry to pirate your discussion jimpete! I didn't have any intentions of doing so, especially on a discussion that would be very beneficial to a lot of people (myself included). Been watching the SF very closely, especially at Lorenzo, and it has been climbing, but not terribly muddy as of yesterday. We all know this time of the year that the blowout is coming so we need to get our fishin in quick! Been picking up a few on a 3 or 4 inch white jig with a pretty heavy head (1/4 to 1/2 ounce). Dont be afraid to throw it in the current and let it drift below you and stay on top of your line becuase they often hit it on the way down after you jig it.

I read somewhere that the flow is going to hit 25,000 in a couple of weeks in order to wash out the rainbow eggs.

I think the water is going to stay clearer this year than normal . I fished PalaSades Saturday and the Res. is really clear even where the creeks come in . It has been so cold the run off is happening real slow . Plus there was not much snow up there to start with . Curt G.

I don't think they are going to do the Rainbow flush again. It has not worked and just wastes what little water we have.

Being new to the south fork and its flows I have heard people talk about it getting high enough during high irrigation use that drifting it becomes to difficult and almost unfishable. At what flows is this?

They said in the outdoor section of the Post Register that the F&G/whoever is going to do the flush the third week of may. They said the levels would be four times the current levels which would put the future levels at around 24,000 CFS. I am not sure where the Post Register got their info, but I would hope they wouldn't publish something that wasn't true.

It will be interesting to see what they do. 24,000 would be pushing flood stage, so not sure it will be that high. I thought I read it some where on the F&G website that the flush was not working and that is was going to stop. I can't remember where I read it tho. If the flush was working, I do not think that F&G would be tagging fish and telling people to keep every Rainbow they catch. This tagging plan seems like a last ditch effort to control the bows before the feds step in because nothing else is working.

As far as what levels to be on the river. I would not be on the river on anything around 15,000 or up. The fishing seems to slow, river gets dirty from washing things downstream that have been dry all winter, and it becomes quite swift in places. Anything over 20,000 starts to get crazy as in death wish crazy.

I should point out I have fished the SF at 40,000 in 97' and did catch a few fish, but I was on the bank and right below the dam where it was still some what clear. It was an impressive sight to see the overflow gate open. Just past the campground below the dam it turned to mud from the bank erosion that was happening. Part of the campground disappeared while we were there for the 3 days and the fence on the west bank below the overflow was completely under water. Even the chain link fence above the main outlets was tore off.

I remember checking the levels last year, not sure exactly when it was, but the level was above 27,000 CFS. One of the reports either the Post Register one or the Jimmy's one said the regular irrigation level for the South Fork was between 12,000 and 14,000 CFS. The higher level definitely changes the fishing, but I will still be up there giving it a whirl. I think it is interesting that the F&G would talk about the flush not working and then turn around and flush it. Makes me wonder what the thought process is behind that. I still haven't figured out their tactics with the rainbows. When I do I will let everyone else know, LOL.

Yeah, I check Jimmy's site regularly, it is good and gives good info. This is the link I use to check the level, [url "http://www.usbr.gov/pn/hydromet/burtea.cfm"]www.usbr.gov/pn/hydromet/burtea.cfm[/url] It is one day behind, but if you look at it the flows are already way above the numbers on Jimmy's site. It is showing 7269 cfs as of yesterday. It will be interesting to see what the level really gets to, and to see if the flush actually works, doubtful.
