Knots
#1
My grandpa gave me his copy of the May 2010 Field and stream magazine. In it there was an article that showed the strongest knots thought id pass their findings on.

Mono to mono or mono to fluro-carbon the strongest knot was the blood knot at 83% of line strength

supper line to a swivel Palomar knot 96% of line strength

supper line to a leader no swivel J knot 83% of line strength

mono to a lure triline knot or a 6 turn clinch knot 96% of line strength

fluorocarbon to lure nonslip loop knot 83% of line strength

supper line to lure Berkley braid knot 62% of line strength palomar knot only held to 63% but its a pain to lip a lure through it. I wonder why its so much weaker on a lure vs a swivel

Tippet to a fly there was a three way tie the 16-20 (pinzer), 6turn improved clench and the orvis knot all about 80% of line strength

For leader to tippet they recommended a seagular knot at 97% of line strength

some other random facts in the article if you wet your mono or fluorocarbon according to the article you'll pick up about 5% of line strength to your knots

Thanks, great information. I hadn't heard of the seaguar knot before -- I had to look it up, but it looks fairly easy to tie.

Some of those may not be exactly correct.
Google "Knot Wars" and watch the tests for yourself. A Double Uni is stronger than a blood knot or not.
There should not be a difference when tying to a lure or swivel of the same diameter steel loop???
I'd stick to the Palomar not matter what they say.
The more difficult the knot the easier it is to have line twist which creates a weakened knot as is the case with the Berkeley knot.
The problem with the improved clinch is not the knot strength. It is the knot cutting itself. Ever tie one and look at where it breaks? You end up with a small curl of line where it slips onto itself and then cuts the loop.
