Salmon Falls Creek Res. Map
#1
We're looking at trying out Salmon Falls Creek Res in June, and I was looking for a map that showed some of the names of the bays etc. Anyway I found this and it is a bit rough but I thought maybe someone else would be interested too.

Anyone know of a different map?

Thanks

I see someone is no stranger to the technical research data from F&G. I thought I was one of the only one's that read those. Ron

Michael- Mostly I was looking for the local names of the bays and places. Google earth used to have some of those but not much now. In looking back through posts and from talking to people who have fished it, places are referred to that I didn't have a clue where they were. Little rough maps with local names like this can helpful when going to a new place. It is good to know about the BLM maps too. I'll have to see if I can get a look at one.

It would be great to meet with you. I consider that you are probably - The Expert - on SFC. Right now our timing is dependent on when some of our kids and grandkids are going to visit. We really don't know when we will go yet. It is one of those - "hey lets try this lake" kind of things.

Ron- I am surprised that you recognized it! I thought I was the only one who dug around in the study papers. Great stuff!

I am far from being the expert of SFCR. Ron actually has had very impressive reports of SFCR and there are 2 guys in the Magic Valley Fly Fishers that are amazing, especially Glen, who have been frequent catchers of the 20"+ on walleye and are very good at finding the Henry's Fork Hybred planted in SFCR like maybe in 2006.

I have been on most of the roads around the Reservoir and can help on choosing where to go depending on your vehicle. Some of the 2-tracks are rough and some of the areas to put in can be muddy. However the main places are nice but can be crowded with campers and the like.

Yes I have found that map and others and I bought a BLM CD of Idaho a few years back that I can just print out where I am going. Sportsmans has a nice computer program that is quite good but when it comes down to it those simple pencil type maps tell most of the story.

Hope the time tables come together I always look forward to meeting other BFTers.

I have the National geographic topo for Idaho. It is a FANTASTIC program, and it I think is just like the one in Sportsmans. I also have the Garmin regular topo and 1-24 topo. The 1-24 topo has route-able roads so I can punch in a location and it will take me there. The roads coming in from the china creek side are a lot tougher to use but if a person has the vehicle to handle it they are a good way to access the west side.
SFCR is a place where I have had some luck but I am not a expert at by any means. If the time works out I would like to meet up too. Ron

By any chance do you know what flies they are using on the walleyes?

I have not seen the actual fly but I am sure it is on the larger side 3"+ and not sure on the color patterns they use either, but the meal items would be perch, crawdad, etc. so I would lean towards wooly bugger type flies in browns, blacks orange/red/yellow type of stuff.

route-able roads does that mean like 2-track or 4x4?

most two tracks are on there. I am amazed at how many of the small not hardly even there roads are on there.
It even does some mountain trails for hiking. Ron

I don't think we will be fishing Salmon Falls Creek Res this year. It would have been nice to meet you all, but we kind of wanted to get some pan fish like crappie etc for eating.

Since SFC res has the highest mercury levels of all the lakes tested in the state, (twice the level of Brownlee) we will probably go somewhere else first.

I'm not fanatic and I know that a few meals a month won't hurt you especially if you stick to the smaller fish, but there are other places on our list to explore, so we will save Salmon Falls for a late date.

We have fished Cove Arm and Crane Falls a couple of times and love it. It is definitely on the list! Haven't ever tried the main reservoir is it better or just bigger?

Probably more consistant on larger crappie and perch around the cottonwood and narrows area.
