MrWiskers, Chick, CFF Tourny 2nd Place, 6-19-2010, Jmax (THE Legend)
#1
Fished the CFF tourny with Jmax today. Man was it early at 4 AM when I got up.
We blasted off at 6AM and ran back into the Wolf to chase some of Jmax's pets. We got to our area, and after 5 minutes of fishing 2 other boated came in and started fishing. We figured we would be in for a long day. Ended up boating 3 bass in there with only one small keeper. Fish came on spook and shakey head.
Gave up on the Wolf and headed out to Harrison Bay to fish some grass. Not much happening there either and just as we were about to quite Jmax sticks and lands a 4.3 lb largemouth on a shakey head. We started feeling better at that point with two keepers in the boat.
Left the grass and started fishing deep. Our first spot was LOADED with fish. For the next 2-3 hours we killed fishing on drop shot and cranks. Fish were holding in 17-20 feet of water on ledges. We culled up to 10.5 lbs with our best 3 and caught keeper after keeper in the 2-2.5 lb range. We even culled one that was 2.8 lbs.
We left that ledge and hit another one looking for a big bite. Got skunked there and then the storm came. We headed to HBSP to get under the docks. Caught another small keeper there on shakey head while we were waiting out the storm. Some days you can catch keepers just about anywhere and some days you cannot buy one.
After the storms let up we hit a couple more places. With less than an hour to go we hit a ledge and started catching fish again. Most were keepers but nothing that would help us. Then it happened. With 30 minutes left I stick a pig on a crank and started yelling to Jmax to get the net. The big girl came about 2 feet out of the water and Jmax about broke his neck getting to the net. Ended up being our best fish at 5.7 lbs. With 15 minutes to spare we loaded up and headed to the weight in.
Best day bass fishing I have ever had on the Chick. We boated 40 bass (25 or more were keepers), 2 blue cats and a green sunfish. Best 3 went over 13 lbs and our best 5 would have went over 19 lbs. We culled two 3 lbers. We ended up in 2nd place and had 3rd big fish.
We stayed after the weighin and fizzed 5-6 bass that we could find. Want to thank the guy on the bank for helping us get to the fish that were shallow. We asked Ram Jack to help but he said he was too prissy to walk down the rocks. emoEnforce All the fish but 2 we fizzed swam off, one was a nice 3+ lber that did not make it. Someone took home all the fish that did not make it for dinner. Everyone needs to do a better job at taking care of deep water fish. If you don't know how to take care of deep fish, learn or stop fishing deep.
