MrWiskers, Chick, Fireman's Charity Tourny - 2nd Place, 7-3-2010, Jmax (THE Net Man)
#1
Jmax and I fished the Fireman's Charity Tourny today. Had a decient turnout somewhere between 16 and 20 boats.
We started the day off fishing a grass flat and boated one short fish after another before I fianlly got our first keeper of the day on a chigger craw, a 15.5 incher, 2.04 lbs. A short while later Jmax got our second keeper, a 16.5" skinny fish on a spook, 2.38 lbs. That was it for the grass.
We then headed to Wolftever to chase some of Jmax's pets. The pets were not very hurgry today. Jmax finally got a skeleton of a fish on a shakey head that measured 16.5" or so but only weighed 2.18 lbs. emoScratch A long while later I was fishing from the back of the boat, basically killing time, and boated one of the 3 fish we weighted in, almost 3 lber on a shakey head. I yelled for the net but the net man was sleeping so I netted the fish myself. emoBadLanguage We started feeling good at this point and Jmax sticks a toad in some structure. We could not see what it was and we were getting excited. I had the net ready and surprise, a 7-8 lb flathead appeared. Very pretty fish but no help.
Gave up on the Wolf and hit a hump with no luck. Decided to hit the shell beds I had been catching some fish on. Ended up boating a couple of the shells, with one 16" keeper that did not help us and a yellow stripe. Marked TONS of fish but they would not hit anything. Hit another deep water ledge and did not get a single hit.
At this time we had 1 hour to go, about 7 lbs in the well, so we decided to give the grass one more try. Hit the same flat we fished this morning and on about my 5 th cast I boated one almost 3 lbs on a chigger craw. Now we have around 8 lbs and again start feeling good. With about 25 minutes to go Jmax says, "I think I may have one". He sets the hook and I ask it he needs the net and he says "No, don't think it will help". Oh,... it helped. Ended up being our biggest fish of the day, just shy of 4 lbs on a shakey head. We made about 5 more casts and headed in to setup the scales.
We ended up in 2nd place with 9.68 lbs or so. Took over 11 to win. I think we got 3 rd big fish too. The hot dogs at the weigh in were good eating and worth every penny of the $5. Congrats to all the winners and I wish the ill firemen all the best. Hopefully the money that was raised today will go a long way for them.
