I went out this morning with my neighbor Walt. It is always good to be out early in the day before the sun gets to hot. As I was waiting on him I noticed some breaking fish over deep water and we decided to give them a try before we moved off. Good choice! We caught four limits of keepers, bass, all of them over deep water. We had fish on almost back to back casts for an hour. I was throwing top water and Walt was using a spinnerbait. Not just any spinnerbait but a 1/4 oz and the fish were swallowing it. I was having fun with my topwater but Walt was wearing me out with the spinnerbait. He was catching more and bigger fish, what a way to start a day. After the initial one hour flash we decided to move north, up river, and fish some bluffs. Walt was still throwing the spinnerbait and I changed to a shakey head. The first bank was in the sun, no fish. We moved on up river to a shaded bank, I caught a three pound smallie and two more keepers. Walt caught a couple and we continued to keep moving. I suggested that we stop on a bank we caught fish on a month ago. We did and as we moved down river I noticed a deep brush pile on the edge of the bank. As we moved closer Walt decided to throw toward the front of the pile. He was bringing his spinnerbait back to within 10 or 12 feet of the boat when a brown submarine came out of the pile and tried to eat his diminutive spinnerbait. It was at least a six pound smallmouth, problem was it was short line and a big fish. Walt did not get a good hook set and when it jumped, he got a lap full of spinnerbait. But at least we saw the fish come out and hit the bait and with the clear water we could see the make and model, so it was not a total loss.
For Ft. Loudoun in the summer, it was a good 3 hour day.
