Pocatello Fishing
#1

I am new to the Pocatello area, new to the forum, and was looking for help in getting advice in the Pocatello, Portneuf River area. The advice that I am seeking is to find a few fishing areas where I can take youth ( I work as a youth mentor) that is within 10-15 minutes drive from Pocatello. I know there is fishing in A. Falls but I am looking even closer then that to take these kids out fishing. Any help would be appreciated.

My suggestion is to go to or call Portneuf River Outfitters on 257 N Main in Pocatello. Number is 232-4776. Roger or his guys are really helpful and know just about every spot possible.

Are you looking for lakes or streams? Do you have a boat?

I know that some people fish the lower Portneuf River from the end of town to the edge of the reservation. But I haven't and I don't know much about it. There are a few small streams in the area also such as Rapid Creek above Inkom. I haven't fished it myself so I don't know were access is or if the spring weather blew them out.

I know that Rodger fishes the Portneuf alot from the lower stretches around Inkom to Lava and the upper reaches above Lava.

Those are your closest areas. -- Call Rodger.

You are also pretty close to McTucker Ponds, great for kids, and I just went there so I'm all excited to go back and have to mention it. Family fishing waters, so simple limits of 6 trout, 6 bass, and no limit on the blue gill, perch, and catfish. I didn't see much in the way of boat ramps, but a canoe or aluminum boat would be great. But there are some floating docks and good places to fish from shore.

There is a map someone made of the ponds with the different kinds of fish he has seen. In #4 it says trout but we also caught bass, perch and a bluegill. And I did see a big 16-ish inch bass up by shore with the small ones, but he swam away before I could try for him.

I used to work as a youth mentor in Pocatello and the kids seemed to like McTucker the best because the fish are easy to catch and they feel like they are more in the forest. they also liked to go to American Falls and occasionally with a longer drive I would take them all the way to devil's creek or deep creek.

What is the fastest way from Pocatello to McTucker Ponds?

From Google maps it looks like:

North on 91
Turn Left (West) on Ferry Butte Rd. to Pingree
Turn Left (SW then curves West) on 39 towards Springfield
Turn left (South) on 1700 W to the "T" at the end
Turn Right (West) on River Rd. to the "T" at the end
Turn Left (South) and go straight to the ponds.

Ferry Butte looks like the only one that has a bridge over the river. I come from IF, so someone correct me if that is wrong.

You could also do I-15 N to 600 if it has an exit (can't remember) and head west.

You might also consider Crystal Springs. It is a couple of miles from McTucker and is regularly stocked all summer with trout.
