A buddy and I took off at 3 a.m. for Ellis to chase some big fish. First half of the day was interesting... we took a raft to cross the river and avoid some crowds, but upon arrival we realized that the paddles were left home [crazy].
After finding some suitable drift wood be began our river crossing. First thing that happened as we pushed off was I heard a PLUNK, and saw something go into the water out of the corner of my eye. You guessed it, it was my rod, so I lunged after it hoping it would resurface in the water. Almost going into the rapids myself, I managed to nab the tip of the rod and pull it back into the boat. Then we had to paddle like crazy to keep from running into a large rock cliff!
This first hole we fished produced nothing, not a bite or any signs of rolling fish. So we decided to head back up river and try our luck with the crowds at the Pahsimeroi hole.
We crossed the river, with our little chunks of bark, just above the hole and proceeded to fish off of the gravel bar. We watched a couple being landed throughout the day, but all in all it was pretty slim pickings. By some miracle I managed to land hook and land two, but from the amount of fish caught around the area in general it seemed pretty lucky. There were 5 or 6 guys standing in the water just under the bridge. They seemed to have the best luck. Not surprising considering the lane for the fish seems to narrow just as the fish enter the Pahsimeroi there.
I'm wondering how much longer the fish will be running? It seems to have gotten good for a brief while, but has slowed down, but it's hard to paint a picture of the whole with the few reports I hear and read.
I hope to get out again, but am not sure I can while the fish are still running. Here are a couple pics.
