Hi all.
I'm new to this board, and am looking for some assistance.
I am headed out from SW WA tomorrow morning with my 12 yr old son to take him fly fishing for the first time. We are headed to the Donnelly area.
Does anyone have some suggestions for some easy streams/rivers to fly fish? We'll mainly be wading, although some bank fishing may work too. We're looking to hook into some trout. Just a father/son bonding trip.
I figure some of the locals can point me into the right direction.
Thanks in advance; and I'm looking forward to your input.

The Secesh River is usually good; catch and release only; barbless hooks. Easy fly fishing with lots of open areas. Mike

I would stop at Tackle Tom's in Cascade and ask them - they are nice helpful folks. The best flyfishing in that area is in lakes but the Secesh is good like Kodiak says and you can also fish the South Fork of the Salmon or the East Fork of the South Fork of the Salmon. You can access the South Fork from Warm Lake Road by Cascade or you can drive from McCall on Lick Creek Road on the way to Yellow Pine to get to the Secesh and East Fork or you can drive a big loop and do them all. The roads aren't great but it is beautiful country. All of these places are catch and release single barbless hooks. Make sure you check with either the Highway Dept or somebody about road/bridge closures. Cutthroat love high riding fluffy flies like Royal Coachman, Humpys or big Adams and they are the perfect fish for a first time flyfisher as they tend to be willing. Another option is the North Fork of the Payette River between Upper Payette Lake and Big Payette Lake or even above the upper Payette Lake where is it more of a creek. I hope you have fun.

I've never fished it, but Johnson creek looks like it would fish well also.

I agree Bug, Johnson Creek sure does look like it holds fish. I fished it several years ago and didn't get a strike after a few hours - I couldn't believe it. After awhile, I walked along a cutbank and threw rocks in the holes just to see if there were any fish in there. I didn't even see one - it was really weird. I've heard that cutthroat will migrate through Johnson Creek but they sure weren't there when I fished it. It used to be full of salmon but we all know that story.
