Teton River

Don't even bother fishing the Teton River right now. It is a tiny creek around the Rexburg area.

Does anyone know if the Teton has more water around the dam? Maybe it's just around Rexburg there is no water.

why would there be more water up river? logic says more water down river because everything else dumps in up above.

The lower sections often fluctuate with irrigation needs. From Sugar City upstream the flows should be just fine for fishing.

Actually hit up the teton this morning above sugar city and did pretty good. Got 3 and one really nice cutthroat, about 4 pounds, all on rapalas. Not bad for gettin out before work for a couple hours!The stream flows looked normal and the fish are as active as ever. The teton is becoming one of my favorite rivers!

Actually there is a dead zone at this time of year around the Rexburg area. The farmers around Rexburg depend on the Teton so much that you can go upstream and have a stream flow and then go down to the golf course bridge and have nothing more than a trickle.

To answer Real Rat Fink's question, the answer is yes go upstream and the flow around Sugar Salem, Teton, and the dam will be fine.

that is insane that they drain that much water from there i have fished right in rexburg and done well but i have never seen it that low.

I just checked it and flows are back up through town, but that is because the farmers are cutting hay and have backed off the water for hay and wheat.

It is insane. I have been thinking about this for a long time. There has to be a way to be more efficient with the water so that the farmers can have what they need and we can keep a reasonable flow back into the snake.

I have caught some huge fish in there, but I have seen just as many huge floaters because they come out of the snake in the spring and then the water level drops to nothing sometimes in a matter of days leaving the fish that don't make it back down river to over heat in the small pools. It really is a problem that could be solved.

Back when I was living in Rexburg, I used to beat my head trying to fish the stretch of river through town because of the finicky water flows. Fished it pretty heavily for a while and finally came to the conclusion that it was worth the extra few minutes to drive upstream to where the flows are more regular.

I have heard of some nice fish coming out of that stretch, but the numbers certainly aren't there. Although I have caught some healthy suckers, those things could live through nuclear warfare!
