Hit the Chick today with Jimmy McMillan. Jimmy fishes the Eastern FLW Series tournys and is fishing the Sept tourny here on the Chick. Turns out his best friend's mom and my mom grew up together in Florida. Small world.
We started the day fishing grass flats around Harrison Bay. Ended up boating three shorts and a nice 2.5 lb keeper out of the grass. Hit a road bed nearby and got nothing. Left there and hit a mid lake hump and boated 3 more shorts and a blue cat on drop shots. Then the rain came.
We hid out in the HBSP marina and I boated a short as we were pulling in. We watched it rain for an hour and hit the Dock Side Cafe for lunch and watched it rain some more. We finally gave up, put on our rain suits and went back out.
Our first stop was my farovite shell beds ledge. Ended up boating 2 more blue cats and two keeper largemouths there, one around 2.25 lbs and one around 2.75 lbs on drop shots and swim baits. Hit a deep water point and zeroed. Made a run waaaay down river to fish some mid lake humps and Jimmy got a 5-6 lb blue cat on a drop shot. Hit some vertical structure and I got a nice 3.25-3.5 lb LM on a swim bait and another short. Hit a couple of ledges on our way back up river with nothing to show for our efforts.
Ended up hitting the main lake hump we fished earlier in the day. Jimmy boats another blue cat and I boat a couple of short LM and then Jimmy sets the hooks and tells me he thinks it is a good on. Yep. Really nice LM around 5.5 lbs (the pic does NOT do the fish justice) to complete our limit and wrap up a pretty good day on water despite 3 solid hours of rain.
We ended up boating 17 LM and 4 blue cats. Our best 5 would have went right at 16 lbs and our best 3 would have went around 10.5 lbs. We fished in water from 2 feet to 35 feet today and threw every bait we owned. Best part was I got to ride in Jimmy's 2010 Z Series 21 ft Ranger. Very nice.
Oh yeah, got to see the Legend on the water was we were leaving. Can't beat that.
