Alvin and I decided to get out this afternoon to try for some more smallies. Got on the water at 2 right after they completely turned the river off. NO current. We figured it would be a terrible evening but we were going anyway.
Got to the same bank we have been fishing for the past couple of weeks and the first 45 minutes were horrible. Not a single fish. I got the bright idea to start casting off the other side of the boat and on my 2nd cast I boated a small smallie. That was the ticket. We positioned the boat within casting distance of the bank and fished casting out into the river channel the rest of the evening. The fish had moved way off the bank due to the lack of current.
We ended up having a pretty good day. Ended up boating 6 smallies (with a nice 18.75", 3.57 lber), 1 keeper spot, 5 drum (around 4-6 lbs each), 3 blue cats, 1 channel, and 2 redbreasts. Not too bad considering the conditions. All fish were caught on drop shot power minnow, pig n jig and small cranks. Water temp was around 62 degrees.
