Does every lake freeze over?
#1
As I recently moved here, I am just wondering if there are any reservoirs or Lakes that don't freeze over in the winter? Curious about CJ strike, Arrowrock, Lucky Peak. Thanks for any info.

Also wanna update: fished the Boise River with little success. Only caught a few small planters, but most of the time it was super slow. Im pretty sure the quick temp change had something to do with it.

I've never seen CJ freeze over, but I've only been there a few times in the winter.

It's been a long time since I've been to Lucky Peak, but I can only remember one time seeing ice on it, and it was just in some areas. There were still open areas where you could cast from the bank. In fact, it used to be a very popular place to fish from the bank. There would be snow on the ground, but a little snow never stopped people if the trout were biting. This was about 20 years ago.

I believe a local tv weather guy water skis on Lucky Peak on New Years Day for a charity. Must be enough open water for him and his boat.

It would be very unusual for any of those 3 lakes to freeze over. They are deep and it just doesn't get cold enough. In the case of strike, I believe there is just too much water movement. Icehogger fished through the ice on it a few years ago, but it was very shakey ice. Not sure I'd have gone out with him or not.

Jigs,

Thats been in recent years and as far as the cisco run in mid January it has only froze 3-4 times in the past ten years, and I have seen people walk on it with their cisco nets with only an inch; keep in mind the cisco come right to the shore, so people are probably willing to risk a four foot deep polar plunge[shocked] Historically Bear Lake would freeze often, I remember being in high school in late February and going for cutts, macks, and whitefish on the hard deck frequently. My grandfather lived in St. Charles on the west side and had land on the East Side; he would always talk about taking his horse team and pulling the sled across the ig lake as a shortcut. Now in all truth he may have only done this a couple of times, but the story was still cool! If you go pre 1920 huge blocks of ie were cut out of the lake to fill ice houses for the spring and summer. I am not disagreeing with you; I just realize the weather patterns have been on the warmer side the last few years, but this year I hope to be on the hard deck for the great cisco run! Go La' Nina

i think if you read historicly they say it only freezes a couple times in a 10 year period. That has nothing to do with the cold or weather paterns they get plenty of that. its the wind. if you can get a week of calm weather without waves it will freeze and i would have no doubt you could drive whatever you want on it. i have read that about the ice they use to pull out for the old refridgerators and cold rooms.

Typically, Lucky Peak does freeze, usually on the upper end. However, it does, at times, freeze completely. My wife and I were watching people ice fishing off of Barclay Bay by the dam several years ago, and one fellow decided to head out farther than the rest. We could see the rest of his family trying to convince their dad/husband not to try it. Next thing, in he went. No one on the ice could reach him, and he died that day. Still a horrible memory for us. Mike

Parts of Lucky Peak, Anderson Ranch, Arrowrock, and C. J. Strike freeze most years. The ice is usually unstable and has thin spots. My suggestion is to stay off those lakes until the ice is a solid 6-10 inches, and be very careful and watch conditions. Anderson Ranch and Arrowrock always have ice safety issues, Lucky Peak can fish well through the ice. Strike can be good if safe ice gets to the good spots. I have seen guys drive cars around on Strike. Just remember no fish is worth your life. Cascade and Magic always have great ice and the fishing can be very good there.

Jigs,

I appreciate the healthy debate, and you are absolutly correct on the wind that it can blow Bear Lake clean and quickly. However, according to the Bear Lake Visitors Bureau Bear Lake freezes 4 out 5 years here is the link: http://www.bearlake.org/icefishing.html As of late it has been freezing less, I looked up previous fishing archives from BFT and this is what I found 2002 (Froze) 2003 (No Ice) 2004 (Froze) 2005 (Briefly/Unsafe/Wind) 2006 (Froze) 2007 (Froze) 2008 (Froze) 2009 (No Safe Ice 10-20% froze) 2010 (Partial/Unsafe Ice) I will agree that when Bear Lake freezes it will be a short season, and in my research of the last eight years I only found one series of posts doumenting 16+ inches of ice. Please know I enjoy reading your reports and I have used them to improve my own fishing.

In the 52 years I've lived on Lake Lowell there have been a few years when it didn't freeze at all. It usually doesn't freeze until sometime in December and usually thaws a short time later. It seldom has any ice in February or March. When ice free we are usually warmer than Nampa or Boise, but when frozen our temps are cooler. We always hope for the ice to break up early.

i have seen well over 16 inches... well i should say what i have estimated to be around 20 inches but thats just a rough guestimation. maybe it has froze sense 04 but i do not believe by the cisco run. that is the last year on memory that i have fished it from the ice. i havnt gone over later in the year so...

I have heard that some of the backwaters and side channels on Strike freeze, but the deeper areas and main channels stay open. Personally, you could not pay me enough to go tromping around on any of those reservoirs.

I've never ice fished, and I'd like to try it out. But if I go this year, I'll be heading to Cascade.
