Montpelier Res. Report 12-5-10
#1
Had to pick some things from my parents today, so after Chesterfield we drove to Bear Lake and spent the night. Made it to Montpelier by 8:00 and had a fish on by 8:01. The first hour was nuts with very fast action. We stayed till noon icing 35 trout cutts and bows, biggest 14'', plus we iced 8 perch biggest 6''. These fish are quite pretty, and the cutts although small would make for a great wildlife portrait. They hit on almost anything, but seemed to like a green sparkle paddlebug the most. Mealies outdid crawlers 2:1. Fished in 38-20 feet of water. I marked fish nonstop all morning on the Vex and I am sure there would be a second bite in the late afternoon. After 10:00 AM the bite became very lite, but still managed to get a few. Ice was just over 4''. This was a great fishing day!

My wife and I were just talking about Montpelier Res. We used to fish there a lot when we were going to USU. Lots of great memories.

She even said, we should go there for our winter ice fishing vacation. I don't know about that due to the size of the fish, but we may end up doing it.

i was going to head that way today but the warmer weather kind of scared me off. i am a bit of a wimp when it comes to walking on water i like it to good and thick. how was the ice and the slush? i had heard some good reports on the size of trout from there this yr. i had heard rumors of alot of 18 inchers but like i said rumors, and we all know how fishing stories can grow. anyone ever done well for kokes in there?

Years ago I caught five kokes in one day there. Usually I am fishing the bottom so I am below the Kokes. I imagine with the vex I could find them easier now.

Windriver and Jigs,

I felt I had pretty good ice, but just in the time I spent there it got really slushy. As far as the rumors of 18'' I would not doubt it; I fish in a place to maintain fast action and it usually produces for me. I am also trying for kokes, but this time I picked up nothing on the Vex. I caught a couple two years ago. In the past if I ice fished to the far creek end I have caught bigger fish, but again I get into a mixed bag where I set up and this appeals to me. I would suggest getting there and set up by 7;00, so you can have the really fast action. I would not rule out a 100 fish day if a person stayed from 7:00-5:00.

Windriver,

I know that family trip is really important to you and I know you would get into the fish. If you stayed in Soda Springs you could go catch your hogs at Chesterfield. Try for big perch or many small fish at Alexander, and finally spend a full day at Montpelier. Other unque fishing options would be 24 Mile, Skinner Pond (Dingle) and Little Valley (If you can get to it.) If you had snow mobiles Bloomington Lake would be a scenic trip you would never forget. I only have ice fished it once in a low snow year in November and I did well. I know you like to swim so you always have Lava, Maple Grove, Riverdale, and Bear Lake (May be closed) Hot Springs in ths area.

OvidCreek mentioned 24 Mile Creek Res. If you go there remember Artificial Lures ,Barbless hooks ,and have to be over 20" and only two fish . Only one pole while ice fishing . Curt G.

Is 24 Mile Cr. Res.usually accessible during the ice period? Every time we are on Chesterfield someone brings up that subject. None of us have tried it. Don't want to start up there and get stuck in a snow drift if we don't have to.

I have never been there . I just didn't want anyone to go there and get busted for not knowing the rules . I don't think they plow the road so you probably have to snowmachine in like Blackfoot Res. Curt G.
