I'm flying back to Seattle to visit my parents for Christmas. I left a bunch of rods that I didn't expect to be using in ID with them, including a Ugly Stik big water surf casting rod that I used when fishing for lingcod from piers. It's a two piece rod, either 9' or 11', can't remember exactly.
A friend has informed me it would be perfect for sturgeon fishing, so I'd like to bring it back with me. Of course, I'll have to check it since it's far too big to be carry on.
Would buying a piece of PVC pipe and cutting it to fit, then sealing the ends with caps and wrapping them with duct tape work?

you do realize those three things you said for a case is some main pieces to a pipe bomb so it may be confenscated I would just go invest in a rod case for it would be much better.. And would look beter to and protect it beter.. Just my two cents

I doubt anyone is going to think it's a pipe bomb, considering pipe bombs are usually small, and this one is going to be at least 5' long. They might open it to check inside, but they won't confiscate it unless it's contraband, which it isn't. All luggage is x-rayed anyway and they'd only have to look at the x-ray to see it's not a bomb.
Besides, finding a rod case that size would be difficult.

go to a cabelis or a sportsman ware house or a bass pro shops they all have rod cases for every kind of pole... Just my two cents... Best of luck to you sounds like you already have your mind made up though..

On one end glue a sewer cleanout cap and it will have a threaded plug. Much more elegant than tape.

I've done that on several occassions when traveling up to alaska and spokane on fishing trips. works great.
as for the person who was concrned it being mistaken for a pipe bomb....that's a bit far fetched and i wouldn't even consider worrying about that. you can certainly expect that they'll open and inspect te contents, but they're pretty much doing that with all checked in luggage. just be sure you've got he outside of the tube well labled for owner identity in the event it gets misdirected to a different airport than your detination.

I did the PVC pipe many years ago when going to Alaska to bring 8 ( 4 were large eyed heavy spinning rods) rods. It was 7" , cap on one end and threaded on the other. Wrapped the rods in a thin blanket and slid them in. Worked great and fastened it to the rental car roof rack. The airline did drop it on the way home and cracked it on one one end but the rods were ok. It was heavy to carry but had a single strap to put over your shoulder.
For a couple of rods I would buy a case or try making one out of 4" Double wall drain pipe and it would be a lot lighter and shouldn't break in the cold like PVC might but it could bend a little.
I now have a Bazoka rod holder that is 6" in dia and another one brand that adjusts for the length of the rod.

Check with your carrier. Until this year we always did the PVC with end cap routine to take rods to Alaska. Some carriers now have length restrictions as well and won't ship your longer rods! For Alaska this year it was cheaper to FEDX and insure.
