i fished riggins last spring /summer for salmon and caught none. it was my first time ever so i was not all bummed. Tons of people tho kinda annoying but hey still lots of fun. I saw a couple people catchfish but alot. one younger guy caught about thirteen salmon tho about 4 natives and kept his three i netted about 9 fish for him then i moved down river and let someone else take over. that kid showed me alot and i hope next year i can land a big one. I did have a huge salmon on tho but when i got it near the shore i noticed it was a foul hook so i gave his slack he ran and bent my hook straight out.
Anyways. Does anyone catch any steelhead this time of year? any tips or anyone going any time soon i would go alot more but i have no one to go with so i usually go alone. hard to net a big o fish alone

winter steelheading can be very productive its personally my favorite time to fish for them because there are not as many people.

I've spent plenty of time in Hells Canyon from Hellar Bar all the way up to the Dam. I'm assuming that you were fishing the area below the dam. One of the perks about fishing below the dam is the fish tend to be kegged up this time of year in the slower water and on the current seams. The water is cold and the fish are somewhat lethargic, fish the water that looks like it will take the least amount of effort for a fish to hold in. Drift fishing here is not impossible but its one snaggy mistress from the bank. Float and jigs will shine here! Good jig colors are white head black body, white head red/black body, straight black, red head black body, pink head black body, anyways see the trend here? Black flat out produces fish! Secondly if you are using the great big tower of power high vis two story bobber I guarantee you are missing fish! I use the tiniest dink floats I can get away with in this section and many times the fish dont even pull them under there is just a slight dip or bob when the fish takes. Lastly get there early because once they jack up the flows around dinner time this time of year the bite is all but dead!

Is anyone fishing the Salmon below Panther creek? Got the urge to hit the Steelhead with the mild weather of late. I know it has been 20 degrees colder in the Slamon region the last couple of weeks.

Was down below Panther Creek today and the river was very slushy. I am hoping in the next couple of days it will clear up and be fishable again. I need my steelhead fix and would love to put some more notches in the 2010 tag before the year ends.

Thanks for the update. I think I will stick to the ice fishing for the next little while. I don't mind the cold but battling the slush can be discourgaging after making the trip up from Pocatello. The Steelhead fever is hard to get over though!

It is even worse living here.....I get to go see the river daily and still don't get to fish. The weather was decent today and is supposed to be warmer tomorrow. I am really hoping it clears so I can fish Monday and Tuesday.

Keep us posted on the river conditions. I also got a new steelhead rod and reel for Christmas and I would like to get out and give it a try soon.
