Hey there guys,
Just thought I would re-account a trip to San Clemente Island located between Los Angeles and San Diego for Yellowtail.
My fishing club chartered an overnighter for 8/28 9PM to 9PM named the Aztec (around 60ft) from a Long Beach landing. We got great bait at the bait receiver (6 to 10 inch sardines) and got to the island before dawn. Fishing the frontside, the morning was a bust with few fish caught so out we went paddy hopping. For those who haven't heard of this it is somewhat like the bass angler's 'run and gun'.
The boat searches for kelp paddys that have broken away from kelp beds, are free floating, and attract a number of pelegic fish (dorado, albacore, and yellowtail) Once found, everybody casts to the paddy hoping fish underneath will bite. Yesterday was a day when fish were metered but didn't want to bite. After hitting a good 15 or 20 paddys, our total for the day was around 20 tails. The fish were really small with an averge of 10 pounds while the biggest went maybe 20. With 25 anglers, that was considered a poor day at this time of the season. No fault of the crew.
I caught my fish yo yoing an Ironman white jig with a red gill flare, while most caught theirs on the sardines.
The 3/4 open party boat we usually take when to Catalina Island the same day and scored 71 yellowtail for 21 anglers.
Go Figure!!
Very good fishing here regardless of one blah trip.

Hey there DH_tubinjoe,
Coming back from Clemente we raced across to near the front side of Catalina then started to cross the channel. Before then, we were taking 6 to 8 foot swells and then the channel only produce 5 or 6 foot swells. About 5 guys on the boat were at the ivory throne and you could hear them from the grill in the galley. That pretty well shut down the galley bite! ha ha ha
If the olympics had a rail relay team competition, America would get the gold every time. Hey, why not? The olympics had fishing as an event in the 1890's or 19 00's.
I would think being seasick was funny, but I've been humbled myself so I ain't tempin' fate with a wisecrack or smirk!
Cut that patch in half dude! I heard of guys doing that then they use the other half on the way back.

well I guess these patches last for 72 hours. oh well.... it worked for me. those 8-10 footers were no problem for me at all!

Hello Guys,
Yes I would have to agree, It could have been worse, and Yes, I would have to agree I was pretty green around the gills on our last adventure. Our fishing was shutdown hard and the swells made it almost unbarable for some, definetly a bad one for me.
We did try to work into some patties on the way back but the closest we really came was a kelp leaf, it definetly wasn't a pattie by any means.
Like the old saying goes, "thats why we call it fishing instead of catching", I definetly was spoiled on my last run. I'm looking forward to getting back out and doing a bit of pattie hopping, part of the real fun in that is the variety the patties produce.

I never have been big on that paddy hoping. I would rather go to an area and fish. I went out on a boat and they did that and other than the fish we caught in the area we started we got skunked. [unsure]
The Capt claimed he saw fish jumping around the paddy,etc but when we got over there and tossed lures and live bait nothing![mad]
If I go on a charter 1/2 day or 3/4 day just take me to the Flat or Catalina and I am happy [cool]

] hahaha. just messin with ya man. that patch we were wearing really messed me up! My eyes are going crazy right now! I almost fell down in the shower. almost like being on drugs!
