Welcome and what up !

Stewarts point has lots of shore line access. I have been camping and fishing there almost 25 years and always seem to hook up. The turn off is between Echo and Overton, pretty good road and most go right to the water.

Have a good one and good luck post up after the trip.

well.... SKUNKED!...

so we finally made it out to the lake at hole 33. set up our camp around 630pm and began to chum up the cove. i used chum balls with corn, bread, anchovies, and bread crumbs.

we casted off the point in the cove straight out with no success all night. [mad]

woke up around 1am and began to chum again then cast off again. woke up at 4am and the fish were jumping out of the water every 20 seconds just teasing us. so i decided to do a little bit of everything jigging, using swim baits (storm) and still no luck. are those fish jumping around stripper? there were a lot of nice sized fish jumping around. wish we knew how to catch them haha.

if anyone whats to show me some pointers feel free lol[laugh]

the fish you hear spashing are probly carp, they are quite loud and make a huge splash sounds like when i belly flop in the pool lol. i've noticed the quick, fast sounding splashes are usually striper blowing up on shad. if ya want a nice fight on med/light gear target those carp, throw some corn on a size 4 snelled hook, with an egg sinker slipped on above a swivel, cast out about 30 feet from shore and just let it sit. note: these fish WILL pull your rod into the lake so keep a close eye on your rod, if not for my son being close to my rods to grab them i would be down 2 poles he actually went in after them cause they were fully in the water. make sure your drag is set light or you will constantly break em off. good luck if ya have any questions feel free to drop me a pm i will be happy to help as much as i can[fishin]

Syn covered things pretty well so I won't belabor the point. I looked at your ingredients to your chum ball and I think that chum would be more likely to pull in a carp and not a striper. All that bread and corn will sure bring in carp. That being said, it probably did pull in some striper just not what you were looking for. Iamthesmf recently posted his recipe for chumb bombs. If I were going after striper I would use that recipe. If you don't have the blender and such good results can also be obtained by taking a small mesh bag and filling it with small pieces of cut up anchovie or sardines. I usually use about a 1/3 of a frozen pack of bait as cut chum, then fish w/ the rest. That'll really throw off an oil slick.

Unfortunately, I am not enough of an expert striper guy to offer lure selections to you... sorry. I know I have had consistent results with the Storm Shad swim bait and spoons, but all my top water has been done with a fly rod and that with just a reasonable amout of success.

If you want a sure fire, cheap carp chum, then use oatmeal, cream corn and a small can of pineapple juice to make chum balls. I like the balls over the broadcast corn method because you can place them very precisely and then fish right on top of them.

I know a lot about Stripers but I may do the Carp fishing on Saturday.

When fishing for Stripers you can never chum to much.
If in doubt, Chum and the chum some more.

Take ten bags or so use the heads and tails for chum.
When the first bag gets soggy cut it up and use as chum.

Every 10-15 minutes throw some chum.

HAWAIIANboy,

In the springtime carp often jump and leave the water. I think they are doing this as a pre/post spawn ritual. I agree w/ Syn, most fish that leave the water are carp. From what I've seen the last few times out is the striper hit topwater, but don't usually come out of the water with their whole body. This makes a quicker sorta splash w/out the belly flop at the end.

Iamthesmf, let me know how the boilies work out please. When I first started fly fishing for carp I did a bunch of research into just about any way it was possible to catch a carp. I did quite a bit of reading on the subject and even talked to some experts on the matter. The overwhelming response I got was that boilies and hair rigs were unnecessary for carp here in America. Basically in Europe the carp is heavily pursued. Being a smart fish, it rarely will take a bait it's been caught on again in it's life. Due to the heavy angler pursuit, many guys were searching for a way to give the carp something they hadn't seen before. Hence the boilie and all that goes with it. Hair rigs etc etc... they were fishing for well educated fish and adapted, the fisherman that is. I was assured time and again that regular old corn is one of the best baits you can use for carp in America. That is slowly changing however. More and more guys are fishing for carp here, and it's starting to become quite heavily pursued with the fly rod. For now, one can simply chum out some corn then fish it with corn and do well. Like I mentioned earlier I went to chum balls because I can throw one ball in a spot and know exactly where my chum is.. when you hand throw out corn it's hard to get it all exactly in one spot.

You can also make dough bait out of grains and various additives, but I've not bothered with them for years either. A nicely chummed spot here in the states should produce... I don't know if you can overchum Mead or not due to the large amount of carp in there, but you can definately overdue it in a small pond or lake. You want the fish interested, but you don't want to fill them up. That's why I like Iamthesmf's chum bombs so much... nice scent, but not alot to fill the fish up on. I will definately be trying those out soon.

If you want to make boilies and/or use hair rigs, by all means do... they work really great from what I've read and heard. I might even make some up myself, I've always been interested in the process. I just wanted to mention that regular ole corn works great so that some of the guys that are new to fishing won't be put off and think they can only catch nice carp with the European's methods. Heck you don't even need to chum to catch a few in most cases, but chumming will signifigantly improve your catch ratio.

Anyhow carp fishing is fun and easy. I take my boy fishing for carp when he wants to so that I know he'll catch fish. Syn is right, hold onto that pole, a big carp will take it in fast... a baitrunner reel is nice for carp fishing, but one can also set the drag reel loose then tighten it during the fight. Opening the bail works as well as long as you are observing the rod carefully.

A final thought. About mid June, my work schedule slows way down. Is anyone interested in a BFT carp outting. I'd be willing to go out in the boat and chum heavily any spot chosen the day before then meet up with a group of you guys and have a carp fishing festival. It'd be a cheap, easy way for us to get together and fish for a day.

I would like to do a Carp fishing festival. Arizona does a Camp Carp for the kids every year with a fish fry at the end.

i've often wondered why they do that? i've only observed it at lake mead they dont jump like that at sunset park, or lorenzi park, nore any lakes/ponds i've been to in washington that hold carp. its crazy how they come flying completely out of the water like a mini whale. if they ever figured out to implement those acrobatics into thier fight our sucess rates would tremendously decrease i think. but i have seen this behavior in early spring, through late summer. must do some research on our "redneck bonefish" lol

The early morning Carp jump [Smile]. This is happening at Willow Beach also, they are carp for sure. I've seen it at both places, and everyone I talk to agrees they are carp.

For every ten fish I hear jump or splash, I only get a good look at maybe one of them. Gold every time, every fish I ever seen jump at mead was gold. Not counting a striper boil.

I enjoy fishing from a kayak. What type of kayak did you get...Sit On Top (SOT) or Sit Inside (SINK)? If you have a SOT there are some great ways to set it up for fishing.

I'd like to go out with you some time on the kayaks. This Saturday I have a friend's son wedding to attend but most times I go out sunrise Saturdays.

PM me if you're interested.

Cool [cool]

SOT are best as fishing platforms IMHO.

I don't know how much you know about kayak fishing but I can show you how I set mine up. I have a milkcrate for the rear to carry fishing rods and tackle, an anchor trolley, mounted fish finder and leashes for rods, paddle, etc.

PM me when you are ready to try your new toy out.

Yup, SOT's are the way to go. I always wanted to get a troop of kayaks out to the lake, but nobody had one then.... Im too lazy now. It's hard to motivate myself to paddle long distances on Mead, when I know I have a motor that could be pushing me around.

But kayaks are awesome fishing platforms. I have an Ocean Kayak Malibu 2XL that, though bulky and a bit on the slow side, is so stable I can stand up and fish on it while push poling around in shallow water without a real fear of tipping.

I have another kayak (Mad River Canoe, Synergy 12) that is a death trap in rough water. Poor design there...
