Deer Creek Halloween Party
#1
[cool][#0000ff]It's been a few months since Flygoddess and I hit Deer Creek for some slimer action on flies. Decided to go trick or treating there today...hoping the power squadron was done and that the weather would hold. Good planning both ways.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I got there first and launched at the island ramp...just before 7:30. She showed up soon after and launched further north off the shore of the still high water. Air temp was 24 and water temp 53 at launch. cooooool.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]It was still dark as I motored out toward the end of the island, where I planned to prospect for perch and walleyes. I tossed out a jig and fly combo to drag behind me and quickly got molested by a few finless Freddies. They were thick and jumping all over the place as it began to get light.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]We came in our usual costumes...Flygoddess went trick or treating with her fairy wand...and got lots of trout in her (net) bag. I went as the Prince of PVC or the grumpy old man. Same thing. I got a few trout too but mostly by accident on jigs being soaked for other stuff.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Started out slow but finally found a hump with a lot of marks on it. I removed a bunch of them. Nice cookie cutter "fat-ten" perch. Kept a few and released a few. Smallest I caught was still about 9 inches. Not bad. No real toads though.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Caught several decent trout from the bottom up, on jigs being fished for perch. Some hit on the bottom. Some hit on the way down or back up. Kept one about 17" for the grill.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Several trollers out but it was quiet on the lake. A couple of other tooners too. Saw a few other fish being caught and one of the boats that came in about the same time I did at noon claimed they had gone through a lot of little ones to limit on big fat ones.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Beautiful day...even if it was cold. Gonna get colder before it gets warmer.[/#0000ff]

What a FANTASTIC day. I have had better CATCHING days, but today was a hunt and that was fun too.
And it really was warmer than it looks, but when the sun did come out so did a breeze and I swear it dropped 10 degrees.
My camera died shortly after getting there, but I did get some great shots

ANd I loove this shot cause it looks like TD's hand are going 90 miles an hour....NOT AN ILLUSION, I watched him flapping his arms landing one perch after another...AWESOME

Oh and thanks for the TREAT...it "was" so good, I think I inhaled it on the way home, and what a gentleman, I caught the waiting till my car started moving, very nice, and thank you again.

[cool][#0000ff]Always enjoyable to share some water with ya Joni. You are a pro and it is interesting how we can "stragetize" what we can expect and then each go off in different directions...each fishing in our own ways...and each usually having a good day...totally differently.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I'm glad you explained about the frozen batteries in your walkie talkie. I thought you were just being like TubeBabe and ignoring me.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]It really was a nice morning to be on the water. Every fish only added to the enjoys...but was really not necessary.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Glad you liked the gourmet white bass nuggets. They are good hot OR cold. Didn't have a choice today.[/#0000ff]

[cool][#0000ff]Sure does...better than any in recent times. By my estimation these are 4 year old fish...from the first good spawn after the lake level came back up. Conditions have been good since and the fish are putting on some size. Interestingly, two years ago these were the dinks that were driving us crazy under the ice.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]My catch was definitely not unusual. Have had lots of good reports throughout the year from perch jerkers who have done quite well on decent sized fish...from many parts of the lake.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Come on hard deck. Now this will probably be one of those years when there is not a complete cap on Deer Creek.[/#0000ff]

[cool][#0000ff]Cool indeed. Frigid digits fer shure.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]I got to thinking that I have made quite a few trips to Starvation this year and have not had a better day on perch over there. No walleyes today, mind you, and no kick-butt Starvation steelhead. But in terms of perch harvest I done okay.[/#0000ff]

Totally killer report! It is like everybody is doing well at DC these days. I am headed out there Wednesday afternoon. Do you think the high temp of 43 degrees is going to ruin the fishing? If you cannot answer then I guess my twin I will have to be the ginnie pigs!

I think it will either be smokin' hot or ice cold. I mean I think it will be a dramatic change, just a gut feeling though. Good Luck, and a reminder.....you can use bait and you can keep these[laugh][laugh][laugh][laugh][laugh]
Have fun Twins.

Ya know what I find the MOST interesting thing about today???? I drive up from Salt Lake City, and I gassed up at Flying J before heading out. $3.34 a gallon....cool?!
I get up to Heber and the first Gas station going into town....$3.17!!!!!! (edited) They use to be 10 cents higher than the city. We are being played here. I can also say, it has been 10 to 20 cents cheaper in Heber for the last 5 weeks that I have been heading that way. I am holding off and filling up, up there Saturday!

If we get the skunk we shall hit the provo river stretches. Yet another spot we swore off a while back. I will report how we do, as always!

It was not bad in the early morning. Insulated levis, Long John upper, sweat shirt and parka and I was actually toasty. BUT, around 10 a breeze came up. Blue skies and it dropped about 10 degrees.

[cool][#0000ff]Who knows? When the weather is changing radically you just gotta go fishing and take everything you can bring.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Try shallow close to shore and deeper straight out. The trout were all over the place today...from right on shore to in the middle of the lake. The perch can be close to shore but you have to find a spot that has deep water within casting range. My best spot today was in about 35 feet of water. You can find them in less...maybe.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Good luck.[/#0000ff]

I doubt you will get the skunk. Unless a real bad cold front comes through. I've been stopping at DC on my way to work and on the way home. Catching a few fish every stop at the south ramp. Hooked a Walleye on a tail dancer yesterday morning. Tried to pull it up on the cat walk and lost it. Plenty of trout. Caught seven tonight in about thirty minutes. Best lure was a sonic rooster tail in green. Kept two for dinner.About 14 inchers. Most are smaller.

Sorry I missed you guys – I would have loved to have seen your rigs.

I went on up to Strawberry were it was gloriously calm and warm until about 11:30 when the inevitable wind came up from the south west. I dressed for bitter cold but by 9:00 a.m. I was down to a fleece. My best day on Strawberry since I started going this year – caught half-dozen bows in the 15 to 20” range and a dozen in the 10-14.”

I had intended to fish chironomids but put on a green leech as I rowed over to my intended weed bed and started catching fish, so why mess with success? The 20” rainbow gave me a 15-min. fight and just wouldn’t come near the raft. Kept trying to swim under the boat so I would fin like crazy to keep ahead of him. Then he tried to head to some submerged trees so I kept finning away from the shore. Lots of fun!

My plan was to oar to the west during the calm and then let the wind blow me back to the car. Worked like a charm. Caught a few more fish and off the lake by 3:00.

A perfect fall day. Hopefully not the last, but sooner or later winter will be here.

By the way, Jodi's furled leaders are awesome!

Just curious, do you ever get many bass hanging around those perch this time of year? It seems to me they would be... Just curious.

Thanks for the tip of gas, two of the stations up there have premium without ethanol. My boat runs much better with that fuel.

[cool][#0000ff]Before water temps drop below about 60 degrees you can pick up a few smallies in the same areas as the perch...but that is in shallower water. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Bass are wimpier than perch when the temps drop. Right now the bass are probably out in about 50 to 60 feet of water and both tough to find and tougher to get to bite. Most serious bass lovers don't like to molest them when they are that deep. If you catch one and bring it up quickly they get the bends. Some survive being released but most need to be fizzed or sent back down with a weighted release device to recompress their distended air bladder.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Contrary to popular opinion though, the bass will bite all winter. Nice smallies come through the ice both at Deer Creek and Pineview each year...from the deep spots being fished for perch.[/#0000ff]
