Gem Lake Fishing Report
#1
Sorry a little last posting this, but I took my boat out sunday 7/22 out to Gem lake in Shelley and went all the way up to the dam (behind the drive in movie theatre in IF). Caught alot of bows 10-12" range it was fun, but never got it to any big ones.

Thanks for the report. It sounds like you had a fun trip. It is nice to have a post about Gem Lake. Do you usually just catch trout there? I had heard that there were small mouth in there also???

I've caught both and some really nice Smallies I might add, but usually it's rainbows. I fish it after work quite often because I live about 2 miles away. I have fished below the dam also but never much luck. Typically I run up to the dam above sunnyside rd with my boat and fish the rainbows I've caught are never big, but I have caught some monster smallies

Ive never caught any Browns out of there not even small ones, but I have caught them upstream from the boat ramp in Idaho Falls just below the dam. There are some hogs up there, but i dont understand why they arent below in larger numbers

I've caught smallies from there up to 4 lbs but the last couple years I've had a very hard time finding them. Not sure if they're more pressured or what. I also caught a nice brown this season there. Went 22+ inches on a PM. There are definitely good fish there. Not to mention there are several spots where shooting carp w/ a bow would do really well.

So far I have heard of the bows, the browns and some smallies... any perch in there? Never hear of anyone catching them. Also, someone mentioned bow fishing for carp... didn't realize that those things were in there!

Paul

BTW... Nice smallie, Fowler127 and beautiful brown, MMDon!

We catch most of our perch and browns out of there on the hard deck. Not enough perch to target but they are a bi-catch the same as that brown was.

Hey don, two questions for ya. First, what is a bi-catch? and second, what were the measurements on your brown? I have two uncles that used to land a lot of trophy size brownies up there several years ago but I hadn't really heard much lately from out of gem.

We're ice fishing the lake for rainbows. Browns and Perch are there but not abundant. That Brown was 29" and caught on a 22" spaghetti stick (ice rod the diameter of a dry piece of spaghetti) on 4 lb test. It took 29 minutes to land him. I know because someone called me when the rod was getting a bite as I answered the phone. They stayed on the phone to see how it all worked out. [Image: happy.gif]

That's funny, because I only live 2 miles away also (only since this spring) and the only fish I've caught there besides suckers was a 12" brown trout off the bank near the boat ramp. I was pretty excited to hear there were smallmouth in there when I moved over here, but have yet to connect with one. It would probably help my cause to not take my lab, but he gives me hateful looks when I leave without him.
