Friendly Reminder...Ice Fishing Courtesy
#1
Many folks and families will be out enjoying ice fishing very soon. Some are seasoned hard deckers while others are brand new to the whole ice fishing experience.

I'd like to provide these recommendations again this year for all of us who ice fish on being respectful to others around you including folks in your party. Including being respectful to the overall environment.

-If you packed it onto the ice, pack it off the ice. Also if you see trash do your part and pick it up not only on the ice but trails leading to the ice and parking lots. There's no need to shove the beer cans, 1 lb propane bottles, bait containers, etc down an ice hole. Packing a couple trash bags takes little to no room in the gear bag.

-If you take a pet, keep the pet on a leash or make sure they stay with you. Bring an old blanket or coat or just use your ice sled for the pet to lie down on/in they get cold too. Please clean up after your pet.

-If Mama Nature calls be prepared have toilet paper, plastic bag, container (plastic coffee cans with lids work great)...yet again several times last year we found ripped up shirts left on the ice covering the human waste...totally disgusting.

-If you take children please watch them for safety reasons and please don't allow them to run all over the place yelling and screaming.

-If you have a tendency to sip on your beverage of choice and/or drop a few choice words, please be mindful of others around you especially families with children.

-If you use an ATV or snowmobile please keep your distance from folks setup and fishing. Also again be mindful if you're allowing children to use these vehicles and for them to be respectful of others fishing and maintain their distance.

-If you night fish and use an ATV or snowmobile don't overdrive your headlights and drive slow. Always be mindful of others out night fishing and some may be in ice tents that have reflective tape you may not see if full throttle at 50 plus MPH plus including if in snowy/foggy conditions.

-Don’t grill other fishermen for information. It's enough to simply ask someone how the fish are biting. If they then wish to expound on the subject, thank them for anything they may have enlightened you with.

-Don't crowd other fishermen. Give them and yourself some distance. If you then interact with them and they are okay to the idea of you moving closer then by all means do so.

-When approaching an ice tent or shelter...give out a friendly 'hello' to notify the occupant of your presence.

-Don't use someone else’s drilled holes without their permission.

-Don't ask to use another anglers auger. If your auger isn't working politely ask another angler if they'd mind popping a couple holes for you.
-If you see someone having difficulty lend a helping hand especially if they are having equipment issues. Just never know when the time will come that you may need a little help.

-No matter the conditions always, always, always use those ice stakes to secure your ice tent as a breeze or wind can happen at any time.

-Always tell other ice fishermen about any ice safety issues you've encountered.

These are just a few reminders when out on the ice with others. Please share your recommendations. Have a great hard deck season!!!

Great post- thanks for the reminders, the mention of borrowing an auger hits close to home for me. I loaned my auger to a fellow on Panguitch Lake a few years back, and he went all the way on the other side of the lake to fish. I had to stop on my way home and walk out to get it from him... *Napolean Dynamite voice* IDIOT!!
Won't do that again-
Might want to add- Take safety spikes or a long rope, it can be hard to get out if you fall through.
Can't wait for the ice!

I have one more to add to this. If you are watching some one catching fish, when they go to gat a rod in another hole, please in fact DO NOT go fish his/her hole. I will share info because everyone deserves the same fun but that is much much too far. Had this happen several times at pineview and rockport. If you ask i will let you fish my holes and maybe we will have a good conversation while doing so.

I went to the Berry with my old man yesterday and learned something dreadful... He is THAT GUY who thinks he has the best dog in the world, and doesn't think it's a big deal to let it roam all over the ice, including other peoples camps. I spent three or four hours listening to him yell at his dog -- over and over and over -- to come back by us, only to have the dog just leave right when he got back. I tried to tell him how annoying it was and he blew it off like nobody cared.

I cared.

If you were fishing the main Strawberry marina area, I am sincerely sorry about the black lab that was drinking out of your holes, pissing on your gear, and being an all around obnoxious mutt.

Leash your dogs, please.

Did he make it up to Hyrum too? Cuz I think I met that pup!

I love dogs, don't get me wrong. BUT - owners should be responsible. Saw a beautiful big shepherd at Mantua - as the pair were walking off the ice - dog plops a big dump (big dog, big dump I'm sure). Guy did the kind thing and kicked some snow over the work.

Um, - so what's gonna happen with that crap come thaw? Personally - peeing on the ice I see as one thing, number twos gotta go - as in - bring a bag and pack it out.

Had a very friendly big black lab come visit our 'camp' on Hyrum. Was kind enough not to sample our floppy friends, or steal any bait, but then proceeded to lift a leg on my auger - luckily not the handle end.
Wandered off to visit more and more camps. Never did see who he "belonged" to.

I don't care HOW friendly your dog is - it's irresponsible and illegal to have them off leash and out of your control. Plus not everyone loves dogs, some other dogs don't love other dogs. Kids are always at risk around ANY dog. Can you spell "liability"? Lawyers can.

Chain 'em, contain 'em, and clean up. Nuff sed.
