Ice Fishing Henry's Lake
#1
Went up to Henry's Lake in Idaho, just west of West Yellowstone. Have heard a lot about this lake over the years, so we decided this was the year to go. My wife and I left Sunday after church and drove up there arriving at 9:30 pm and stayed until Wednesday morning when we left and drove home. We stayed at Jakes Wild Rose Resort. We were one of 3 guests that was there. Temps were pretty consistant at 24 degrees. The ice varied from 4 inches at the West end (just out from the resort) to 7 Inches at the East end (Goose bay and the State Park). We setup the tent on the ice over 12 ft of water on Monday morning and 16 feet at Goose bay on Monday afternoon. Tuesday we fished in 9 feet of water at the State Park. Fishing was okay... nothing of any size. The lake has a reputation for large fish in the 5 to 10 lb size. We caught 1 lb and less in size. We were the only ones on the lake that we saw on Monday and only saw 3 other groups on Tuesday at the State Park.

Sorry you didn't find the big ones. There is a missing year class of fish. The F&G says they are over populated? They are experts, but many in the know have not been able to find the 4year olds. I have caught several this ice season in the 22" range, still nice respectable fish but the giants are definately fewer and further between then normal. Hope fully I'll find one on Sat.

Thanks for the report KJ - I didn't realize it was a no go after December. I have my trips planned for Antero res and Eleven mile res in Colorado - hope to get my 5+ pounder there. Both are legit places on the HD if you want new out of state action. Maybe next year. Lot of ice left for you this season.

I fished Goose Bay Tuesday. 7" of good ice. Only caught one nice fish around 4 pounds, several small ones. Curt G.

We were marking fish on the bottom pretty consistantly. So if we were in 9 ft of water, they were at 9 feet. Goose bay was the deepest and they were on the bottom there as well (16 feet). My wife caught 2 chubs at Goose Bay. When I used the water cricket, the cuts were agressive and hit it. When we were dead sticking, both hybrids and brookies and a few cutts were what we caught.

A good trip, but won't return until next year. Utah is about to turn on at some of the lakes. This was just a warmup trip to get the gear up and running. Gonna get the scouts out somewhere over the Christmas break. Gonna head into the Uinta's next Saturday and look at some of the lakes there. Thinking about Alexander, Washington, Mirror, Trial and some in between. Got too many scouts to haul in on snow mobile. If it continues to stay warm, we may be able to drive to some of those lakes. Would be nice if the Berry or Current Creek froze over by Christmas. Usually I am fishing Mud Creek by now and have been to Scofield and Hunnington a time or two. Different year this year.
