[cool][#0000ff]Fishing inside the harbors can (literally) be hot and cold lately. With the low water levels there is not enough depth inside most harbors to keep the fish comfy and feeling secure. They will come in to forage after a couple of days of calm weather but boogie on back out into the open lake when a front comes through and/or the wind blows a bit.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]Up until Wednesday of last week there were good numbers of white bass, bluegills and perch being caught from American Fork and from Saratoga Springs (at Pelican Bay). Folks were really whacking them. But Wednesday was a full moon and a front moved through...with wind. On Thursday nobody but nobody was able to find any fish inside any of the harbors.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]The annual "big freeze" on all the harbors and protected spots around Utah Lake is late again this year...like last year. Who knows when (or if) we will get thick enough ice for ice fishing? And if it does freeze enough for safe drilling, how will the fishing be in the low water conditions?[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]I have been following the conditions around Utah Lake this year and am finishing up my 2012 Updates section for my Utah Lake Fishing writeup. My prediction is that there will be the usual flurry of fast fishing right after first safe ice...but that the fish will not stay inside as long as "normal". The combination of shallower water and impatient angler commotion will spook the fish more easily and they will head back out into the main lake after cleaning up the available food supply inside the harbors.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]That being said, there is likely to still be some ice fishing...even in lower water levels. During the last big drought...ending in 2005...water levels inside Lindon dropped to about a foot deep. But anglers were still able to find a few spooky fish hanging under the docks if they were quiet and made the right presentations.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]The fish don't overthink the situation. They just react to the conditions they live in. If the water is shallower everywhere, they deal with it. They just move around a lot more...looking for food and structure...and are more easily spooked by noise and commotion.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]Low temps are forecast after next weekend. Not low enough for a serious hard freeze, but maybe enough to put some ice on a few protected spots. We will have to wait and see...whether the fish move in and whether they are catchable.[/#0000ff] [signature]

Hey Greg were you in your toon or on the bank? Did you get your leaks patched? I took my toon apart the other night and put it away for the year. That was sort of
I've had a lot of fun in it this fall. But I think ice will show before long so it was getting to be time to take care of it. Sorry no tugs for you maybe next trip. Good luck. J[signature]

It's whitefish at Bear Lake time of year... You working tomorrow? I'm heading over for a day trip to big blue... Let me know if ya want to come along? I had a work buddy cancel on me... so I have room for one more...
My Saturday's are spoken for by the family getting ready for Christmas, so I can't make your berry trip. Plus I didn't catch anything at the berry that I can't catch closer to home so I'm not much of a road warrior.... If I was driving that far, I'd go to the gorge and catch some burbot... Sorry economics drives my truck driving decisions lately... Never know if the fiscal cliff is going to affect my job or not, so I'm not wanting to overspend until I know for sure... Anyway good luck and let me know about tomorrow... Later J [signature]

Good choice not going, I made a bad call and tried the east side and the fact that only one other boat was over there should have given me a clue. Anyway the wind was rolling some pretty big waves at us and the sun stayed behind the clouds and I didn't want to freeze your Dad so I just wore my light jacket so I'd get cold about the same time he did. Well dang that wind was cold and the waves kept growing on us and I just basically don't do so well after whitefish. We got skunked. I got one trout hit as we trolled back to the ramp but wasn't paying attention and missed it. I should have tried the west side with Ralph, TD, N.E.T.O., and BearLakeFishGuy. I'll bet they got on the fish, at least the waves probably weren't as bad. Anyway we quit kind a early. I think I got your Dad pretty cold but he stuck it out like a trooper. Well catch ya later. J

he is like me and will never admit to being cold. I can rember a few times in the goose blind and on the ice or swimming for cisco when i was way colder than i let on. I also rember after the cisco incident we stoped and went sledding with wet cloths for a couple of hours that was way cold at the sinks lol[bobhappy]

Well he won't admit it until I get him home, then he tells the girls so I get in trouble for keeping him out too long. Hey Coot and crew got a dozen so I guess it's just me that can't catch them. Later J

Now today was cold, the wind all day was really doing it's thing I'll bet we see some ice show up soon. My fields were freezing during the day and so as soon as the waves stop I'll bet we get some ice. At least on Cutler and maybe Mantua. Are you ready for it? Later J

I don't know about Mantua since it is WAAAY colder there, but utah lake for sure will not freeze anytime soon, at lieast not this week. Low 20's at night won't do anything even in the harbor protected areas. It needs teens at the very least to even form any thin cap at all.
