My boy and I always use spikes whether we are fishing for trout or panfish. Has any one used power bait through the ice for trout? How does it compair to wax worms or somthing like that?

I've been out fished by my dad many times through the ice when he used powerbait, but I've caught bigger fish with jigs tipped with something.

You can put a little powerbait on a jig. Works fine.

Have had very good luck with power bait on a ratfinkee.
We usually use the corn flavored kind.

[cool][#0000FF]Powerbait is definitely attractive under the ice, as well as in open water.
A couple of years ago...by special request...I modified my Ultra Minnow Jig mold to allow me to use a small treble hook at the end, rather than the single jig hook. The Ultra Minnow head holds horizontally, presenting the ball of "power putty" at one end.
I made some up in both glow and non-glow. I don't use the stuff myself but had good reports on the effectiveness of the jig heads. See below.

I think it's interesting to see all the powerbait glowing in the ice.
Haven't actually use it myself under ice, but obviously works for some folks. Likely more for trout than panfish. Though there are crappie nuggets and such.
Known some to swear by gulp maggots over waxies, but I've had a lot of luck with waxworms, and mealworms.
There's always style of jig presentation to play into it too.
Been thinking about dropping a stringer of cowbells down another hole for a jigging attractor. Even have a set that glows!

[#0000FF][cool]I do not have any made up right now but will only take a few days to pour and paint some. Shoot me a PM and we can discuss colors and numbers.

One of the ONLY ways I'll lower myself to using PB is when I'm ice fishing.[shocked][angelic] I shove a wad up inside the "tube" of a tube jig... it DOES count using PB!
It works like a charm to "scent" the jig and seems to stay there for 2-3 fish sometimes. Once they get the taste in the water, it usually turns into a catch-a-rama!
