Mantua 12/22
#1
Went to Mantua this morning with a friend. I was there before anyone else showed up, but another guy showed up and we headed out on the ice. I only went 150 yards or so out - 8.5 feet deep. My trip got cut short. Shortly after I started fishing, my wife called super-sick, and the kiddos needed some taming. But I caught a trout, a perch, and 2 gills before I had to run. The other guy we ran into headed clear out to the knoll. Another party of 3 walked past us and fished. 3.5 inches St the edge on the south dike. We were on barely 3 inches where we were fishing. Not sure how thick it was out further where the other guys were, but the ice was really good. No flexing or cracking. I'll be back out there tomorrow or Monday, and maybe both days. Good luck and be safe if anyone else heads out.

Two years ago, I gave myself pneumonia by ice fishing too much. But it was worth it. [cool]

Thanks for the report Ben, this is likely your last winter ice fishing, if your heading back to Ala. so enjoy it while you can. [Wink]

I was part of the group of 3 that walked past you. Ice did get a little thinner out that way, about 2 3/4". Fishing was ok, one nice bass, a few perch, and lots of trout. The ice really started singing after you left

I figured the ice would once the day progressed. Glad to hear you guys got into some.

On a funny note, the other guy that was out past you checked the ice yesterday before I did. He ran into an older gentleman who lives in Mantua. The guy got mad at him for going out and drilling some holes. Reminds me of last year when some old guy was griping about us (we got there before sun up and they showed up after 9) fishing in their spot. HAHA! We got a kick out of that. I am sure it will happen again this year.

I checked out Hyrum this morning and I'm guessing a couple more days and she'll be ready. Drove to Mantua after and saw some crazies out there. Talked to a couple guys that had been doing ok. It was nice to actually walk on some hard deck for a change. Sadly my fishing will have to wait till at least monday, hopefully Hyrum will be ready by then!

It was definitely nice being out on the ice for a change. That is good to hear about Hyrum too. Newton is pretty much there too. Last night, it had 3.5 inches of really good, clear ice - an inch more than Mantua had last night. I will be somewhere Monday. Maybe at Mantua taking someone's spot.

I think we just barely missed you then. We took off as you were about to get off the ice. I wondered - if we might have been in more of the flow-zone from the inlet where we were.

Nice collection. Don't usually catch bass through the ice - but my avatar is one from Mantua last year. It was a fun fight!

The sun coming over started that ice flexing a bit. I think we were done. But - we'll be back again!

Hi Bama

So did you fish out from the boat dock or did you come in from the road on the South end? I'm going to be there first thing in the morning I will be in the large frabill tent and I drive a blue 4 door dodge cummins if you want to say hi. I hit Idaho today Deep Creek was hot, but Weston I got skunked which sucked because I wanted to catch some of those slab perch out of there! Thanks For the info!

"launch" was from the south road. Walked out toward the knoll. Usually go farther - today was a short-stop.

Folks did go further and did fine.
I'll be there Monday for sure. May explore other waters tomorrow morn.

Gawd I love having vacation AND ice!
