Starvation 01/05/13
#1
Got out for some cold weather fishing at Starvy yesterday with wiperslayer and mike4cobra. It was -7 when we arrived and warmed up to to a blistering 9* before we left. We drilled 4 holes and moved out farther from shore after each one showed no or few fish. We finally found a good group and set up for the day. We got 13 perch up on top and lost about half as many before they hit the top. We were hoping for some of the big ones but we got none over 9.5". We also caught 9 bows up to 20" and lost a couple at the hole but only kept 2 of those fish. It was a decent day and as always, it was good to fish with you guys. As we were leaving, we talked to a BFT member, I think his user name was Bigtacklebox[:/], good to meet you, hope you caught a few. Thanks for the help from all the members that answered questions for me. Here are a few pics of the fish.

Looks like you had a good trip. I read yournlast pm, check out google maps for the access road. I will be back out there in a week or so, the two hour drive each way is a little long but well worth it I think. Have a good one.

When the perch are that fat they can be a couple of inches shorter.

Awesome pile you have there. Congrats.

I still think that lake is sorely mis-named! Those fat fish are ANYTHING but starving!

Nice trip, nice report. Yeah - I'm suffering perchy-envy! And those Starvy Steelies sure are fat and plump! Might be worthy of trying to fire up the smoker in this chill-air for such a prize!

Nice haul, wh2.

The other BFT member you spoke with before leaving; did you talk to him while on the hill on your way out?

If so, I overheard.

Glad you guys got some decent perch. Mine were bite size.

According to your pic, looks like I was fishing just a hundred yards southwest of you on Saturday. I wished I would of known you were there I would of said hi! We ended up with 34 perch and 3 trout. Fishing was slow and if I would of not had the Vexilar I think we would of caught a lot less than that! It helped a ton! Like I said we fished from 8 am till 430 pm and that was all we caught it was really slow! I was in the large 12 ft by 6 ft frabill black tent! Wished I could of said hi!

Yes, that was me. You must have been close to the bottom of the hill to hear us talking[:/], did you try moving around to locate bigger perch?

I remember seeing your tent, wow you did good. What was your largest perch? I had my flag out but it was between two tents, so ir was hard to see from where you were. We came by your tent when we first got there and drilled some holes but saw few, if any fish on the finder so we kept moving. We knew we had the long drive back, so we left at 2pm and got back just at dark. Were you by those guys in the red tent?

I think you were going up the hill and I was checking holes about 50yds out. Sound carries well over a lake.

My first couple of hours were spent moving around a lot and I didn't settle on anything until I had nibbles.

Once I finally found something willing to play, I used the rest of my time focusing on that set of holes.

I ended up with this, plus another dinky perchlet.

Our largest perch was a11 inch perch, we would get a school in and caught 2 or 3 then they would leave it was really slow. I was in 53 feet of water, and when the perch did show up on the Vexilar you really had to play with them to get them to bite. They usually did not bite until I teased them about 3 or 4 feet off the bottom without the Vexilar we would of not caught to many fish! Green Gizzy Bugs worked well for me. I was between the two red tents and the bridge. I was basically 150 yards out from where the trail comes down off the hill and a little north.

Wow, that must have been nice to see that big girl come through the ice. 53ft of water, that is interesting, for some reason we were thinking that the deeper was was nearer to the bridge. Sounds like we should have gone up the channel. How do you teased them by lifting your jig 3 or 4 feet off the bottom? Do you slowly jig up and down or just lift the jig, trying to get them to follow it? If you were between the two red tents, then we stopped close to where you were are drilled a few holes there but saw nothing there so we kept moving. Too bad you did not have a BFT flag[Wink], I would have come over. Thanks for the info.
